Sometimes, I feel guilty in playing games that contain too much gameplay and little story, and the little story there is uses the simplest vocabulary possible! I'm not learning any Japanese in those cases!
But if I play a visual novel, I'm guaranteed to learn new words every few minutes! Does anyone else feel guilty in playing games with overly simple dialogue/text? |

Nope.
Hell, I skip the story sequences in Another Century's Episode. |

Generally, when I am playing a game with more gameplay than plot, the gameplay is excellent. You know, like Mario Kart. It is so much fun that I don't have time to worry about it being mindless.
If a game isn't fun, I just don't play it... |

I, uh, honestly skip over the story in most Japanese action games I own. I'm not at all to the point where I can start recognizing a lot of kanji on the fly, and so am compelled to peel off the tough outer layers to unveil the juicy gaming morsel that hides inside them.
Visual novels and RPGs are another matter, of course, as what are they if not for the story? |

No.
Even because I have VERY FEW japanese games (Only Capcom vs SNK, Street Fighter Z-3, Guilty (:P) Gear - All for PS and running by emulation - and Kanon). If you consider I have MDK2¹, SWAT 3, AOM², Warcraft 3³, Unreal Tournament (and some HUMONGOUS MODS), Q3A, Kingpin, Rollcage¹, Worms 2 and several english games (I think I have about 20, 30 games... Maybe more...), the japanese ones I have are very few. Besides, I have NO knowledge about this language. See ya! ^_^ ______________________________________________________________ 1 - MDK2 and Rollcage has five different languages to install, but NOT portuguese and Japanese. 2 - My Age of Mythology is all in portuguese, my own language! A good thing by M1cr0$oft at last! 3 - Warcraft 3 has a unnoficial portuguese translation patch, but only game texts. But I think I'll keep the game in english ^_^ |

Nah, I don't feel guilty at all. Most of the non-visual novel games I play are fighting games anyway.
I feel guilty when I use a language patch for Japanese visual novels, though. As great as the Kanon patch is, I should probably be playing it in Japanese. :( |

Surely it's the other way round. when I am playing my "text games" and people icq me asking me what I was doing I'd say err... I am playing... insert some mainstream games.

I must admit... I don't play them when my floor is awake.... which makes it very hard to actually get through them. |

The thing is, each genre did teach you a thing, as shown below: 1. RPG - Organizing 2. Adventure game - Reflex and brain teasing(In puzzle solving) 3. Fighting game - Concentration(As in devoting on training a character), good sportsmanship 4. Character building type game(Eg. Diablo) - Planning Of course, you cannot judge about some other games such as Postal or GTA in either if they are teaching you a thing or not.... I have to agree to Bust Nak on that remark. Thing is, my siblings will freak out more when they see me play ,say, Kanon than say, Mortal Kombat, due to the origins and such. |

I do however get into nice discussions about such games with members of my anime club. |
