Default Planetarian help?

Welp, I figured this was the best place to ask, so here goes. I managed to purchase Planetarian using the guide over at Insani. I installed it on my computer, then installed the patch. My problem? I can't even get past the intro text. The text on the black screen passes, and I get a picture of a street, then nothing. This wouldn't happen to have anything to do with my OS, would it?

Do you happen to be running on Windows 98, by any chance? If so try going into the directory in which Planetarian was installed and removing PatchUI.exe (although if this were the case, you probably wouldn't even have gotten to the part you mention)

If you happen to be running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, then your first move should be to make sure that your default ANSI codepage is Japanese. Instructions on how to do this are available here.

If you happen to be running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, and your default ANSI codepage is not set to Japanese, and you do not wish to make your default ANSI codepage Japanese, then you need to install this; yes, it says that it's for Office XP, but you do *not* need Office XP to install it.

As an aside, all of this information was detailed on planetarian.insani.org, here.

... I believe the answer is in the patch OP text just before you install it; it runs best under particular settings. I believe it's Japanese for non-unicode languages and... uhh, East Asian Text installed? Haeleth can probably tell you better than I.

If you've XP, you need the original OS installation disk to install the languages.

Yea, I run on Windows XP, and have my regional settings changed to:

Install files for East Asian Languages
Japanese non-Unicode

I have yet to encouter an error playing any doujin or JP game, or with my english programs under this setup. well, the \ is a yen symbol now, but hey, like that matters.

And the fact that the computer clock now runs on military time... but hey, that's a small price to pay for Planetarian!

It doesn't have to. You don't need to change "Regional Options" to Japanese, just the language for non-Unicode programs.

Yay! Switching the region did work! *dances* That was an excellent game (I'm sorry, I played it before replying! I'm so evil =/)

One more question (may as well ask in here instead of making a new thread)- how do I decompress pak files? I've just been kind of curious on how to do that one ^^

Depends what you want to get out of there. Plane_pak (http://d4.princess.ne.jp/pcat/, first link) can access some of the data. For the bytecode itself, just rip it from the memory of the running process (if you don't know how, you probably don't want the bytecode).

It's probably the music you're after, in which case plane_pak doesn't manage to extract all the tracks. But most of the missing ones can be got from the planetarian demo, where they're not encrypted at all. Or you could just play them in the in-game music player. ;)

Speak of, how many music files were there supposed to be? I know a lot of people had problems getting full files out, but I managed to extract 8 perfectly good music files that don't cut off in the middle, or have any of the other problems people have been having.
