There's also space usage. For titles like the two 'ef' games and School Days, where images take up the majority of the space on the DVD, upgrading to 1024x768 or 1280x960 will likely increase the file size by a fair amount, to the point where lossy compression (and the associated loss in image quality) is required to avoid drastically increasing production costs.

Which could be solved by using selectable screen resolutions. Typical PC games (as well as some bishoujo games) have such settings with the intent to cater to the lowest hardware denominator as well as allow flexibility for higher spec'd systems.
Are most visual novel engines capable of being scaled that way? Back when many PC games used pre-rendered backdrops, you saw either lazy/unconcerned developers who'd lock the screen resolution (majority of users ultimately didn't care enough about resolution) at one setting or more flexible ones that went the extra mile to support different resolutions.

To avoid developmental hassle, one mahjong game developer even sold 3 SKUs to suit user tastes: 640 X 480, 800 X 600, and 1024 X 768, each on a separate disc.

All in all, it's much easier for a developer to stick with one resolution if the consumer base is indifferent.

Good point, although some titles are simply bulked by dummy space (makes illegal distribution less attractive to those with strict bandwidth limits?). AFAIK, ef games only amount to ~2 GB each.

I haven't specifically looked for dummy space, but my copy of tlt appears to legitimately use up a decent portion of the DVD.

I don't know how I missed this until now, but apparently I/O is getting a director's cut PC version on June 27, 2008.

http://www.getchu.com/soft.phtml?id=544425

For those who don't know this game, it's basically the unofficial entry of the infinity series after Remember11. It had a LOT of talented people working on it (Nakazawa Takumi + Tanaka Romeo for story, SOYOSOYO for art, ONOKEN for music), so I was always surprised it didn't sell so well (maybe too much SF..). I actually bought the PS2 version a while back but never got the chance to fully complete it (this game is even longer than Clannad. I am not joking), so hopefully the PC version will renew my motivation.

O.o Hiqualsoft (or however they'd romanize it...), after the surprise announcement that veteran seiyuu Hokuto Minami will dropping her role in their latest game "Sakura sakura" (http://sakura.iam-hiquality.com/) on 5/23. had just announced on 6/2 that Sakakibara Yui will be taking up the role.

Recording apparently has already started on 6/2... and they fully intend on having Yui's voice set in the demo to be released on 6/6... and the sale date for the game has still not pushed back from 6/27. Sounds like a hellish marathon of recording...

How does that even work? Don't they have totally different voices?

mm? Yui's got a somewhat passable loli-voice. So.... 何とか成る…多分

Still, Maki and Aoyama are the two main attractions for that game anyways. >_>

Her role as Yotsunoha's Nono was perfect, imo, so she definitely can play the role.

Indeed it did. The only game of theirs I played was that Shinjyu no Yakata thingy, but I liked it, so it was sad to see them go.

Damn, that means Clover Point will end up hard to find soon... Anyone played it, know what it's like? The reviews on Eroscape suggest its worth buying, and the art seems attractive, but has anyone played it/know more details about it?

The trial version's still up.
http://holyseal.net/cgi-bin/mlistview.cgi?prdcode=6865

I'll grab it and check it out. I'll probably have a bit of time to decide before Himeya runs out of copies. =P (since Meteor's been out for a while now)

It's called milking the cow, or "circussing" in laymen's term.
