This is why I think DRM is useless. All it does is turn off people who would have bought it. Those who wouldn't have payed to begin with still download, whether it's DRM-free on release day or a cracked version shortly after.

I don't think there's a single generalization we can make about DRM.

In many cases, it's possible that these schemes hinder more than they help. However, you also have to consider the dynamics of the market in question. For smaller eroge publishers in Japan (whose titles are less likely to be leaked ahead of time), authentication has supposedly increased sales by preventing piracy over the first week or two of release.

In that market, launch sales mean everything since products rarely have staying power. Most people who're interested in a game play it right as it's released, so pirates who're willing to pay but often don't (due to free downloads right off the bat - they only pay if there's no other option) are effectively kept in check.

It's a different market climate here, though. It seems like a lot of the fans of this stuff are:
1) Computer-savvy
2) Generally without other equivalent media (e.g. lack the ability to read Japanese), and thus can only really go for mangagamer, JAST/GC/PP and fan translations
3) Relatively few in number compared to the big markets, so you'd want to sell as many as possible, rather than turning people away

This all adds up to DRM being cracked pretty damn soon after release, and in a niche market like this, you aren't going to get the same insanely front-loaded sales curve... you're going to get a slow number of sales over time, just like indie titles, which makes having a lot of titles available (rather than one or two 'hits') very important, and also minimises the benefit of DRM

Oh, I agree about the minimal benefit of DRM in this case. It's just that I dislike the blanket statements people often make (often with the pretense that they have conclusive evidence backing their claims), either in favor of or against DRM.

Of course. Pirates come in all forms.

A few years ago, there was a problem with people buying PC games, burning copies, and returning them the next day (this was before high speed internet connections became as prevalent. However, CD burners had gotten much cheaper). That's why chains like EBGames stopped accepting product returns.

Based on personal experience, most of my friends who used to buy PC games download everything now (it's one reason why the PC market is in fast decline, whereas the game industry as a whole is expanding), except for MMORPGs that require subscription fees. Naturally, many still buy a lot of console games since they couldn't be bothered to modify their systems to run copies.
