FWIW I after 2 years of half-assed self-study (usually only on weekends), I can now read the first Full Metal Panic novel fairly easily (dictionary lookup about once per page). So don't sound so disappointed :)
It depends of course. I just happened to find it really easy to learn both kanji and grammar, but I've heard lots of horror stories too. I guess it depends on your study materials and mindset.
