Is 'Five Centimeters Per Second' any good? I loved 'Voices of a Distant Star', though I haven't yet gotten around to picking up 'The Place Promised in our Early Days'.

I haven't actually found a copy of 'The Place Promised in our Early Days", and THAT I want to get, because Makoto Shinkai is a top-notch producer and animator.

I guess I'm in the waiting-to-buy-a-BDRW-drive-and-then-waiting-for-BD-version camp... :D

'Voices of a Distant Star' is great, it's my favourite work by shinkai. And if you love shinkai's art, 'The Place Promised in our Early Days' and 'Five Centimeters Per Second' shouldn't disappoint.
I thought 'The Place Promised in our Early Days' was a bit dragged though, being a full length feature film. But the art was just so pretty. (Oh just look at that beautiful sun) Oh yes, did you guys saw that short little story shinkai did about cat? I saw it on niconico video. Really a nice and warm piece it is. |

Isn't it an extra on the 'Voices of a Distant Star' DVD?

Which version of DVD are you getting? Not that black and white cat story, I mean that new one last year.

I own and watched Place Promised... It had wonderful art/animation yes. And I'm sure the story is good...maybe? I wouldn't know, its too dragged and dull, and the movie puts me to sleep without fail every time I've attempted to watch it. =3 works better than any sleeping pill!

5 Centimetres is far more watchable than Place Promised. I think it's more watchable than Voices, too. Then again, it could be that 5 Centimetres is just more my kind of story.

If the story you're referring to is "She and her Cat" (can't remember if it's black and white or not, it's been a few years and I'm not really at a place where I could just pick up the DVD and check) it's on the Voices of a Distant Star DVD; if he made something more recent then I have no clue about it.
I was also surprised to see that I had apparently started a Makoto Shinkai thread without noticing it! Then I realized that the Anime North thread got a little OT in so very many places. Sorry for necessitating the extra pruning, zalas! |

I saw the trailer in the last midsummer and was really impressed with this piece of drawings... :)
"5 cm per sec" is really something... ^_^ ...but sad. ~_~ I've been watching the DVD version, actually. |

On the subject of Shinkai Makoto, I just thought I'd point out a nice little clip that I ran across the other day. It's a commercial he produced for the Shinano Mainichi newspaper:

I'd say it was pretty good. IT doesn't have any of the, well maybe not as much of the, sci-fi in it, but it is very watchable, and self explanitory. I would pick it up.
But i enjoyed it, because I could really relate to this one. |

Although I am just repeating what has already been said, 5cm per second is well worth seeing. If you liked any of his previous work you'll like this one too.
