new to this, what tools to use?how to translate?

Hi to all, and please i beg pardon if my question is too naive.
I am just starting in this so i still dunno anything. i tried to browse the forum but i get more confuse.
I will like to try to translate some hentai games just for fun. Here in tokio i have access to tons of them and i will like to know which tools i will need to achieve so, what i must to change and where to look.
For the translation part i will rely on my girlfriend that is japanese so i am more worry about where to find the text to translate as i suppose the games data will be encrypted/hided in some files or somewhere.
In the beginning i will like only to change the text parts for translate games from japanese to english/spanish/italian. i suppose that the different companies will have different ways to program/pack this data. there is some place where i can find some "how to" with basic explanations? At least for understand the basic principles of how the things works.

in particular i am focused on windows platform only..just in case is necessary to say...can be do that for game consoles is different..as i am a totally beginner.
any sugestions are so welcome!thanks in advance.
there is any places where i can find some straight way tutorials..tools used ofr differentgames etc?
because is so slow and messy to search all around without know what i am searching and probably i will do the job that already lot of peole did before.

Try concentrate on one game first, game engine formats differ wildly from one game to the other.
