Then again, Kana is also TakaJun's favourite VN (of which he's played, what, over a hundred?), and he probably played the original Japanese version of it too, so my theory doesn't really work.
Well, the sick, dying loved one story archetype isn't one that's particularly common to visual novels - it's mainly in (Asian) television that it's cliche. I can see someone who has never experienced a storyline of Kana's nature praising Kana to the sky, because the subject matter is, in itself, touching. My problem with Kana was basically that I'd watched about a million J-Dramas and K-Dramas that handled the plotline with much more finesse, and had moreover watched a very dear friend struggling with her brother's lifelong fight with a terminal heart disease. Kana, when I played it, seemed clunky, unimaginative, and really quite contrived by comparison. I kept expecting a mind-blowing emotional scene or plot development, given the overwhelmingly positive things I'd heard about the game, but they never came.

As for Crescendo, I actually enjoyed it, but I think it highlights the dearth of decent English VNs that it's so commonly recommended to fans of Kana. There's _nothing_ that the two games have in common besides the fact that they focus more on the story than on the sex.

As for Kana, I guess it's a hit or miss thing. For me, the essence of kana little sister is in that ONE SINGLE SENTENCE. Yes, I found the whole story boring from the begining to, well, nearly the end. And that single sentence made the whole story of kana flashing before my eyes in a mili-second as I burst into tears. (And YES, I have seen many J-dramas before such as one litre of tears, and YES, I have seen many K-dramas including the one which COPIED the storyline of KANA)

But kana is never one my favourite eroge. Why? Because the bulk of the story is boring for me. Maybe because it's too old.

Honestly, I have no idea what my favourite eroges are. It changes every now and then as I replay things. Just to be safe I'll name 'Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo' and 'Haru no Ashioto'. Games like 'Koibito Doushide Surukoto Zenbu' that I like _now_ will probably slip out of favour later, but akabeesoft games never get old.

I still really like 'Tamayura' but can't really list it because, from a critical eye, it doesn't really work out anywhere near the same level.

Well, the plot concepts in Kana aren't uncommon, so it could be coincidence. Given how niche the genre is, the chances of plagiarism (from Korean TV writers at that) seem slim.

Which drama are you referring to anyway? I know that a certain hit is sometimes accused of being a Kana ripoff. Similarly, Japanese otaku accuse its follow-up of copying Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien.

I'd say Planetarian, but it's really easy to win a race of one, if you know what I mean...
