Default No Game Over Screen

Visual novels are great because you never have to see a "GAME OVER" screen. Don't you agree?

I already died twice in FFXII and thought if I play Clannad instead, I don't have to worry about dying.

Actually, many visual novels do have 'Game Over' screens (or more commonly, the rather frank 'BAD END' screen) - and although you wouldn't see it in Key's games, some of the ways in which protagonists can die are a lot worse than anything you'll find in FFXII =P

I felt much worse over that "leave town" scene in AIR than I ever did over a Game Over screen.

Good ending, bad ending, it's all the same:

Because only you are in the infinity loop.
Now, if you're looking for a game in which you never have to see a game over screen, try the old Lucasarts adventures, like original Monkey Island. While there was a way to die in that game, it took 15 minutes.

And of course, there was the rubber tree.

Try Kanoso. After a few bad endings there, a "GAME OVER" screen will seem as harmless as butterflies and fuzzy ducklings.

Yeah, instead you have to worry about what the hell you're doing wrong, because you just got Kyou's bad ending twelve times in a row. :/

Even better yet, try text-based adventure games (eg. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or the Zork series.) I guarantee they'll be so confusing that you won't be able to get far enough to merit a game over.

This may not be completely accurate. Take, as evidence, this transcript from "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy", in which it proved suprisingly easy to get a game over. (And a horrible death or two.)

You wake up. The room is spinning very gently round your head. Or at least it
would be if you could see it which you can't.

It is pitch black.

Astoundingly, a bulldozer pokes through your wall. However, you have no time for
surprise because the ceiling is collapsing on you as your home is unexpectedly
demolished to make way for a new bypass. You are seriously injured in the
process, but on your way to the hospital a fleet of Vogon Constructor ships
unexpectedly arrives and demolishes the Earth to make way for a new hyperspace
bypass.

Next time, try turning on the light.

We are about to give you your score. Put on your peril-sensitive sunglasses now.
(Hit RETURN or ENTER when ready.) >

Your score is 0 of a possible 400, in 19 turns.

Would you like to start over, restore a saved position, or end this session of
the game?
(Type RESTART, RESTORE, or QUIT): >quit

Ah. Never mind, then.

BTW, if anyone wants to try it out for themselves, have fun.
