Well those who have seen my other thread will already know this but next July me, JRai, and his girlfriend will be going to Japan for a week's vacation. Now alot of stuff about Japan I already know but it never hurts to ask if anyone else has been there before and what they can tell me about their experience. Where to go, What to eat, What to buy, etc. All feedback is welcome.

Soon you will be able to change your nickname to "Experienced Gaijin".
I haven't been there myself so I can't give a lot of advice, but have a great trip :) |

You'll also want big suitcases. I'd recommend bring an extra empty suitcase with you, because if you're like me and the friends I knew, that suitcase won't be empty when you leave. My one friend was quite sad when he realized he had to cut back and give up on some things because he didn't have enough space in his luggage for it all. And to quote one Gamerz employee I still feel sorry for, please remember that "Every floor becomes the store." |

Well as far as getting things back home, as far as eroge is concerned, we were told to send it in the mail before we leave.

I brought back a couple loli manga, and fate/stay night when I went.
I got through customs fine, but I got a great luck fortune from a shrine, so I figured i would be fine. Course I am crazy. buy manga from book-offs, they have a 105 yen section. i bought like 10 volumes of manga for between 200 and 350 yen each when i could have gotten most of them for a buck a piece... Sleep in manga cafes on small trips alot, save money on hotels, they are surprisingly comfortable, try and get a room with a mat rather than a chair. cost like 20 buck a night and you get get free drinks and internet, though you need to be careful with only staying only the amount of time you bought. some have a shower. If your skeptical try it once early on in your trip and see. there are better and worse ones so asking around or looking around first would be ideal. |

LOL @ customs they asked if I had Kangaroo meat as a joke and sent me in. I had over the spending limit and eroge art books and games. Over here unless you have food and such they really don't care. Just keep selected receipts of purchases. They asked once if my comics had adult context I knew I would be taxed so I said no.
I met a couple from Austraillia who would ship stuff regularly home. I'm thinking it is cheaper to ship there than me. So I bring two suitcases one empty and huge and smaller one with clothing. Though i had a base camp so I wouldn't lug my giant case too many places. Any rate hostels are quite cheap and are often better to go to than hotels for the price. I know of one in sketchy Osaka for 22 bucks a night. When not in Akiba scout out some of the other chain stores in various other areas. They have usually more stock than Akiba who has not a good selection on holidays. Places like Animate, Gamers, K-Books and of course Book Off and all their other chains have cheap manga, DVD's, games, artbooks in very good shape(over here used stuff is usually ravaged) and their other counter parts have various other merchandise. I usually also stay with my friends in various areas and they let me stay with them. In July you said it is a rain season so bring rain proof bags or what have you to keep goods in good shape. For food convenience stores and supermarkets have very nice food. Compared to here in Canada where the food lingers for days and is more expensive. Last edited by Leo_Otaku; 2009-12-18 at 15:56. |

This info is being quite helpful, however I had already booked the trip through expedia and so have hotel reservations, but that info about the hostels will be useful when we do our next visit to Japan for a Winter COMIKET!!
