Happy Valentine's Day, everybody!
What better way to celebrate than to sign up for NaNoRenO- a challenge to complete a visual or kinetic novel, during the month of March. If you ever wanted to try your hand at making a visual novel of your own, this is a great opportunity. With so many tools and resources now available (like the Ren'Py and Blade engines), it's possible for anyone to create a game of their own. What story would you like to tell, and share with the world? Here are the rules for NaNoRenO: 1. You mustn't begin your work prior to March 1st 2. Teams are allowed 3. Developers may join the fray at any time within the month. If you feel you can make the deadline, give it your best shot! 4. The challenge begins when "The Death Clock" at the lemmasoft forums has less than 31 days. (March 1st 12:00 AM) The challenge ends after "The Death Clock" reaches 0 (April 1st 12:00 AM) The lemmasoft forums are at http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/vie...?p=23353#23353 ****What is ALLOWED Before the Month**** ~ concept sketches, doodles ~ brief script outline or ideas such as synopsis ~ taking or looking for possible background pictures ~ non-game related programming or testing such as figuring out how an engine works is permissable ~ music composition roughs or looking for possible music to use in your game ****What is NOT Allowed Before the Month**** ~ drawings you edit and enter into your game ~ written or typed dialogue, script, or text ~ completed or edited final version of music ~ actual game programming (Use of game engines doesn't apply, of course) Making a complete and working Ren'ai game is challenging to do within one month's time. It's highly suggested you stick to the newbie rules as much as possible which are: -stick to a short story -if you can't draw backgrounds, use photos -if you can't program, use an available ren'ai engine -if you can't make your own music, ask to use another's for your game -plus you can also do some cuts like keeping artwork black & white or have no music at all You can also form a team and take on the challenge together if you prefer. To sign up for NaNoRenO, just announce it in this thread, and I'll add you to the list! Current Participants: Jake (team of 2 or 3) absinthe & lordcloudx denzil DrakeNavarone yuirei ShiraiJunichi and TMBpower Misu-Net (team of 2) Raikiri mugenjohncel pheriannath Kyukuru Thalidomide Katiea Mirielle mokenju1 TMS Fuu & TMS Tai Team Musume (suzushirou and two others) Nomad J. Any prize?
If you want to prohibit writing before the contest, announce a topic on the starting day. Seems more like an otaking bruhaha to me. And it ends on April 1st... suspicious. Last edited by GipFace; 2007-02-14 at 12:18. |

NaNoRenO has been run the past few years, with moderate success. It's an event that encourages people to make Ren'Ai games. Don't think of it as a contest with prizes and strict rules. Think of it as a personal challenge to people to make games. (The game-making equivalent of al|together.)

Some questions - What criteria will the visual novels be judged by, how important are these criteria in relation to each other (e.g. will plot be more important than graphics? and etc), and by whom?
(So we know whom to bribe *cough* >_>) Last edited by pheriannath; 2007-02-15 at 07:21. |

As PyTom mentioned, it's more of a challenge than a contest. So there aren't really any judges- anyone who is able to finish is considered a winner, I'd say.

Let's change the name to NaViNoWriMo, because that makes sense as an acronym, and it is much more fair.
The point is to make short visual novels for people to play, right? So, disqualifying the visual novels for being the wrong genre seems to be an unintended consequence of this weird acronym... Last edited by Shii; 2007-02-15 at 21:38. |

Theres actually a very one sided debate on this over at the Lemma-Soft forums.
http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1757 Pretty much, it says that its going to be opened up to any time of visual novel/kinetic novel. |

That's good news. I can't participate this year because my computer is a couple hundred miles away, but good luck to everyone.

That's wonderful news :D While I like to read ren'ai, the ideas I come up with aren't really ren'ai related...
Guess it's time for me to join the Lemma-Soft community, thanks for introducing me to it :) |

Sigh......I'm sure I could think up a good short story if I put my mind to it, but I basically lack all other VN-making skills. :(
And it's only like, 1 more day to March, too......too late for me to even think about joining a team of some sort, huh? |

I dont know... if you poke around Lemma-Soft Forums you might be able to find someone else who is interested in doing work with ya. Plus there are already some premade resources for you to use (like background photography and character art) even if you cant find anyone to help out with your project and still want to give it a try.

It's alright, Misu.....I've thought about it, and I think I'll stay on the passive this time around. No point rushing headlong into something without a plan (or a solid idea for a plot, for that matter). :)
That means I'm not going to (and probably not able to, for that matter) take the initiative.....but if there's a team out there who needs a scriptwriter for a new script at the last minute, I'm available. If such a case happens (although I doubt it will), will you recommend me? :) |
