Who thinks up of these titles?

Here's something I just thought up while I was trying to conjure up the strangest dream about kanon last night (letsee if anyone can outdo the exploding cow incident!). Looks like I need some plushie power to get me started ^_^

Is there a reason why Kanon is called "Kanon"? Like .. what does the series or game have anything to do with "Kanon"? Same for Air and Clannad .. what's the thinking behind the naming convention? I know Azumanga Daioh is called that way because it's a parody of the name of creator of the comic series ..

Creating sensible titles, especially when in english seem to be somewhat lacking .. imagine the dissapointment of those kids when they realized that the new dvd they rented called "Bubblegum Crisis 2040" had NOTHING whatsoever to do with bubblegum! And then there are those people that keep laughing at the episode titles of the slayers series because either the title makes no sense whatsoever or has nothing to do with the episode itself ~_~

Sometimes it seems like the scriptwriters make a story and then just randomly look up any interesting looking word in the dictionary .. any ideas?

Ok, I'll bite.

Kanon - Classical music piece composed by Johann Pachelbel who was heavly inspired by a one Johann Sebastian Bach.

Air - Another classical piece of music written by none other than our good friend Johann Sebastian Bach.

Clannad - A current folt/new-age band. Enya used to be in it way back in the day. Music is very celtic in nature. The title of Clannad 's (game) opening is Megumeru which is katakana for Megg Mell. Megg Mell is celtic folklore's version of Heaven.

Hey, that's pretty good! I knew about Kanon being a classical piece 'coz it kept cropping up every time I was looking for the game/anime sheet music at online stores, but I had no idea about Air and Clannad ^_^

"Kanon" (usually "canon" in English) and "air" are actually generic terms, although Pachabel's is the most famous canon and Bach's "Air on a G string" is among the best known airs.

Clannad makes more sense, because (as well as the musical connection) it's Gaelic for "family", and family is the major theme of the game.

I believe the proper technique is to think of a perfectly apt and suitably descriptive title, then translate it into English by looking it up in a dictionary and picking the first word you like the look of, even if it means something totally different.

At least that explains "Sentimental Graffiti"... ^^;

I had a lot of thought about that too... I thought it was the music Canon then they have different spelling. But the story itself doesn't have anything to do with Canon, so there really isn't must sense to it...

Canon in the english sense is a word has a few different meanings, mostly to do with the ecclesiastical laws. At first I thought it could be related to the calendar of saints .. but then again how many names of saints can you find in the game? The closest one I think would have to be the reference of the word to members of religious communities, but I doubt that's what Key had in mind. Most probably there really isn't any connection between Kanon and Canon. Just a coincidence of similarities ^_^

I just don't know whether the connection between the titles and music were intentional. The word Canon does have a meaning in the music sense as well, but I guess we may never find out the truth, huh?

I know I had a friend who got confused when I mentioned liking Kanon and I told her about it, because she'd looked it up and found a manga about a girl who played the violin who's mother died or something ^^;

Kanon is also a musical term. I believe it's referring to the reuse of motifs/melodies for different voices. Maybe it's referring to each girl's story as being a reincarnation of the 'fairy tale' motif and that joined together forms the game?

Yep .. but strictly speaking, the spelling for that definition is Canon and not Kanon.

yep, threw me for a loop cause I thought "why were they translating Kanon into German and not English, thats not fair" , especially in a Japanese store.
