Who cares? If one were trying to sell the VN commercially, being the 'hot thing' might matter, but I don't see any reason it ought to influence a fan project.

Right now "we are left with an unfinished translation" just like you said a one-man team results in. Clearly a group can burn-out as well.

I suspect the unofficial patches (resulting from the public nature of the wiki) are part of why the team burnt out and stopped prematurely.There wasn't much motivation to polish it up. By the time they finished a quality work no-one would care since they had all played the half-baked one.

Where did all those staff go? you'd think someone would still be on it...

I think the bigger problem was the fact that it WAS simply because of the public nature of the wiki. It attracted a large amount of people who either had not the skills, time or dedication to translate it.

If that's the case, then it highlights one of two big pitfalls of group translation: Choosing people who are willing to work each other for a single purpose. It'd be ideal if the people selected could work together happily, especially when they are coordinated, but in this case, it's also acceptable to accept people who are willing to compromise.

The other is bledin' obvious: Get someone to lead and coordinate the work. Aain, choosing the right people are important.

I personally don't give a damn about Koihime (totally not my cup of tea, I'm afraid), but at the same time I want to contribute to MangaGamer this time.

Kouryuu strikes me as a good fellow who is trying hard for our common hobby (not that I am 100% fine with MG's policies, believe me), and not supporting him this time could have critical consequences regarding MangaGamer's reputation and the feasibility of other mid-to-high profile localizations.

Aksys' 999, Jast's Demonbane and MG's Koihime should be supported by vn fans simply because they are all do-or-die titles for their respective publishers and, in a broader sense, for the whole business of officially translated visual novels. If 999 bombs Aksys will return to the jrpg\shmup\beu niche, if Demonbane flops the whole Nitroplus USA deal will probably cease to exist altogether, with Jast concerning itself with the usual sex romps, and if Koihime doesn't meet its 2k sales quota MG's reputation with japanese developers will probably be badly damaged.

Of course none ot those publishers is perfect (Aksys' first Jake Hunter game was a mess, MangaGamer has absurd download prices, debatable translations and no retail copies and JAST... is JAST), but they are all that we have at the moment if we don't want an official market devoid of anything but low profile sex romps.

I will definitely buy 999, sounds like exactly the kind of game I like.
I probably won't buy Demonbane unless I hear great things about it.
There's no way in hell I'd buy Koihime, voiced or not.

Personally, I don't want "official" market to exist. Period.

Why? Because JAST censores everything, because MangaGamer cuts out voices, has absolutely no verbatim copies and just wants MONEY despite everything (but implies DRM - screw that).

JAST has been known to make some hilarious mistakes, but censoring Demonbane isn't one of them.

That, and the nature of the corporate entity/company is to desire money over everything else. So why get mad at that?

Unless you're BUTTHURT at the fact that people are willing to pay the insane prices for English-translated VNs. Which you clearly are.

Mangagamer are willing to listen, but who's going to talk?
