Getting back on topic: In regards to the quality of translation, given their planned schedule of release it comes as no surprise that quality would be as deep in the ground as it is. I for one don't buy this whole "beta test" excuse--and that's exactly what it is--but I'd still be willing to play the games. What I do have an issue with, like many others, is the DRM. It's not that 5 uses aren't enough or anything like that, I just can't find myself comfortable with paying so much money for DRM'd software. Given the choice, I'd much rather import the Japanese original with physical packaging and download a English patch for it instead. (Maybe Circus et al. can arrange it so that people who purchase the Japanese original can access the English translation by Mangagamer. Meh. I highly doubt that will happen, but still.) |

I wonder if one could simply extract the translated script from the English release and apply it to the Japanese original? It's probably not the way MangaGamer intended things to go, but as long as they're getting money for the purchase I wouldn't think they'd be too bothered by it. Of course, you'd then be in the financial position to have to afford both the Japanese and English releases, but considering the age of most of their games for sale I suppose you could get the Japanese original for a reasonable enough price.

If they implement something like Steam (which I'm not a big fan of), then they might be able to manage their release schedule by making periodic updates to the shoddy quality of their work. It would show that they are in fact committed to releasing as many as they can while making sure that quality is at an acceptable level, kind of like how some games with numerous bugs/glitches gets fixed with a patch later on.
Of course this is all a pipe dream, but I'm not buying their so called commitment unless they go through such lengths. (Though I'll still get Da Capo and probably Suika) |

see, here's the problem with a Steam-like implementation:
The games are unlocked for a particular account after purchase and you can install it as many times as you want w/o restrictions. Problem is, for an eroge that does not need internet connection to play, someone can easily give his password to over9000 people and they can all install the game without actually paying. It works for STEAM games because they need to be logged into the account in order to play, ensuring that you can't have 2 people playing on the same activated game at the same time. |

Don't you have to be logged onto Steam even to play a non-online game, like Half Life 2? When I first tried it out, I think you had to be logged on, but you could forego the updates for an off-line game, unlike for Counterstrike. It's been a while since I've used Steam, though.

No, that's not what I was getting at--I was stating for the people concerned about the 5 activation limit or wanting a physical copy of the game that maybe they could purchase the MangaGamer version as well as the Japanese original, and then find some way to apply the MangaGamer script to the Japanese installation such that they could just hang onto this extracted script to be shoehorned into the Japanese original next time they needed to reinstall, rather than worry about draconian DRM limitations. Everybody's happy--the end user has his boxed product or freedom from DRM, and the translator still gets paid. I just meant that since some of the game are pretty old, even though they'd be buying two products, at least the Japanese one would be a bit cheaper, hopefully.
I'm certainly not advocating that people try and do this as a means to avoid buying the MangaGamer release; if you use any part of their product then you owe the translator the asking price for the piece, pure and simple. |

Ähm Louis ya know.. that would be so absolutely illegal lol. I mean someone extracts the translated text, people can just go on, download the original game via torrent, get the translated script (from torrent, File Sharing services etc.) and apply it.
That would not only bother Manga Gamer in the way, that they'd try to get those people, no, they'd especialy deal with those people who created the software to extract those files.. But all the law things aside (have enough of that due my studies anyways). I've a bit of impression, that MangaGamer thought, that people won't notice (or at least not much) translation errors and tried to get the games out as cheap as possible. At least they're fixing the translations now~
