Need native Japanese speaker to help with VN translation

Thanks much, pbsaffran. I think "Growing enormous" will do well enough for rendering "taputapu de mochimochi". We do want to get the innuendo correct ;-) We've redone some earlier scenes with that in mind, can't wait to see the reactions.... :-O

small dogs sometimes bark with sound that is like wan (especially when they bark fast), or at least I heard dogs like that =P

Exactly, many smaller dogs (particularly those of about cat size) tend to bark similar to Wan, and In japan those are about the largest dogs you see people owning. At least in Tokyo. Though I doubt they get too much larger in the villages. but yea, I can assure you almost every dog I've seen here in Tokyo is small enough to fit in a bicycle basket.

By context the second sentence probably has something to do with overeating, but we couldn't find "mochi-mochi" or "tapu-tapu" anywhere. Currently rendered as "All that nibbling adds up."

Hey, just got to that section of the game during my play through of it on the DS, so thought I'd give a bit better input now that I know the context.

First of all, you're right, K1 is talking about dieting and they comment that he doesn't look fat. He takes this line, and Rena starts to go into cute mode after wards.

Judging from this I'd say it's him trying to justify that he needs to diet, as he's trying to convince them why he's swinging the bat. So the "tapu-tapu" I'm thinking is him tapping his stomach. Just for kicks I tried it, and yea, if you have a bit extra to your stomach, it sounds a bit like "Tapu-tapu" when you pat it. "mochi-mochi" would be the sound effect of something rubbery or sticky, like the desert, mochi. Lastly, the sandanhara, as I've found through some quick googling again refers to this idea of being fat. its "Stage 3 stomach" as in the way a stomach looks during the 3rd stage of pregnancy: big and round.

So I'd probably render it as something like: "I've just been hiding my gut. I'm really rolly-polly" or something like that. The main point is he's trying to say hes really fat, does so in a way that Rena finds cute, so I'd use something like rolly-polly that has those connotations while still keeping a ring of cuteness.

I suppose pbsaffran's explanation is efficient enough. But anyway my 2cents.

Tapu-tapu describes something fluid or tender which easily trembles, but also has weak tension acts to return itself to the original shape. Something like pudding, surface of brimful water, or flabby belly.

Sakusaku is usually used for a easy work describes doing it smoothly, Kirikiri rather describes doing a hard work intently. So both used for different contexts as pbsaffran said. Actually, Sakusaku oiteku and Kirikir oiteku sound a little odd to me. However, sometimes people, especially in Visualnovel writer, dare use inaccurate grammar to aim for new sound. I think it would not be too incorrect to say both are being used as same meaning --quickly, swiftly, promptly, immediately, etc-- here.


Incidentally Sandanbara is a belly with bellows of a threefold fat. I mean this.

If you're playing the Japanese version of mahjong, you don't translate most terms: the names of the sets (chii, pon, kan) remain, so do the declarations such as ron or richii, the furiten, the dora, the hands' names, etc.

I'm not sure if I'll bother with it for the little bit that's in the demo/Onikakushi, but that's probably a good idea for Himatsubushi, once we get all the previous question arcs (CD1) done. Short scenario, but lots to learn...

The thing is... if you don't know mahjong, you won't get a thing anyway. If you know mahjong, any attempt to translate the terms would only confuse you.

I found this guide to be pretty informative about the general rules of mahjong when I was trying to figure out what was going on in the mahjong scenes of Snow Sakura.
