We've been waiting a good deal for this...
And we can keep on waiting. They aren't charging, and they're putting good effort into it, so I'm not going to complain. That aside, it has been a bit longer than most expect though. ^^;; |

I've been trying very hard the past few days to ignore this thread, but fine. You gemot regulars of all people should know my strong opinions on status updates and making any statements about time frames. Shame. Shame I say! Anyways, you can tell from this post that I'm alive, just as you can tell when I post on this forum for other things. I'll make the statement here that Haeleth is also alive. And while I can't attest to what's going on in his life, for my part, I've got to build a prototype that 3 offices on the globe want to see within a week and this cold I just caught from lack of sleep isn't helping. And yes I still work on narci2 every night =P If we can have it done and released tomorrow we'd do it. Anyways, I'm going to go back to my lunch and work. Oh, and Java needs to die.

Java has needed to die for around a decade at this point, tell us something we don't know.

Don't worry about that. I doubt I'll live to see the day Japan cares about cross-platform compatibility! =P

You mean like the Day Square-Enix declares its guaranteed to be blockbuster hit Final Fantasy XII is getting a cross platform port to the Xbox360 merely because the 360 is more popular and currently owned by more people in both America and Europe?

I mean giving us eroges that run natively on other platforms so that I don't need to boot Windows to play them!

Unless it's something where the interpreter itself is multiplatform--i.e. ONScripter--you probably won't see it. Generally speaking, Windows is the gaming OS in Japan, Mac is the graphics/design platform, and Linux is for hobbyist and programming use. The whole rabid open-source thing is much more subdued there, and you don't have users demanding companies make additional versions of their games to accomodate nonstandard operating systems. That sort of expectation is primarily a Western conceit; as you can see, while companies like id Software have begun providing Linux binaries for some of their games, it's hardly a widespread thing. We're also talking about software houses much smaller than places like id, where a single game can make or break the company depending on the money and manpower they put into it and how many copies they sell. The non-Windows gaming market just isn't large enough in Japan for them to bother crafting alternate versions of the games; in the case of companies like Type-Moon who license a third-party game engine, the decision isn't even in their hands to begin with. There may be more users outside of Japan who would gladly buy a Linux version of an eroge, but since when has the Japanese eroge market cared about what outsiders want?
If anything, you may begin to see some games show up on OSX as that gains popularity, but as I said, in Japan if you play games, you run Windows. Linux? Forget it. |

Well, the fact is that ONScripter wouldn't exist if a Japanese person wasn't interested in getting nscripter games to work on other platforms! So there is some interest, but not much at all, indeed.
