Huh... that was kind of random, but it reminded me of a time when I almost cried in class. Was watching some civil war drama in U.S. History (maybe it was Glory) and I had tears welling up after the end. I got some pretty awkward looks.

I will never think of the act of crying the same way again. Furthermore, I'm going to regard you with the utmost suspicion from now on when I see you in person. |

it kinda troublesome for me that most good/well-knows Visual novels is eroge D:
(since i wont play eroge for a few reasons) so, does anyone know an VN that is not eroge, but at the same time quite sad and doesn't end after like 5 minutes? (sorry for my selfish (?) request and its my first post, i usually say it bad :P ) |

Yay, another one that made me cry. I cried during the Ayame path in Crescendo. Not much else to say. I've heard lots of people say they did not like Crescendo, but I enjoyed it.

Crescendo was alright, but way too short, I found. I like my visual novels to be of a reasonable length.
EDIT: Also, Najica, isn't your avatar a character from 月は東に日は西に? Isn't that an eroge? =p As for long, non-ero nakige... to tell you the truth, I've no idea. Things like Clannad, as well as the nonero console versions of ero nakige are probably the way to go. Last edited by Asceai; 2008-01-23 at 14:05. |

Console versions are the safest bet to go if you can understand the Japanese. Non ero, and since they come after the original release, they almost always have extra scenarios, new CGs, and other tweaks to them. All-age PC games tend to only come out for extremely popular games, Kanon, Air, Clannad, Muvluv/Alternative, etc., since it's a large financial risk otherwise.
I can't speak for most other people, but personally, I just use ctrl and fast forward through ero parts these days since they're not particularly interesting.

Then you really should read
I'm not sure about the 'happy' part of this description though... I'd also suggest reading Narcissu (kudos to Haeleth for his unparalleled translation of this little gem), Planetarian and maybe Tsukihime (with non-ero patch). P.S. Welcome aboard. ;) |

I actually never understood why Kana was spoken so highly of. I bought the game a few years ago after my friend had been raving about it, but the story never really drew me in, and I frequently interrupted play to browse the internet and switch to other graphic novels.
I can understand someone who's never really come across a story of that nature before being moved to tears by it, but really, the loved-one-dying-of-a-terrible-disease plot is the most overused storyline in Asian soap operas today, and in most cases it's handled better than in Kana because TV producers don't feel the need to insert pseudo-incest into the equation (seriously, did ANYONE find the H scenes in Kana arousing?). Add to that, I didn't really feel like Kana captured the sense of total desperation and the struggle between hope and despair that comes with actually having a loved one who's suffering from a terminal disease. For mine, the plot focused too much on the protagonist's growing feelings for Kana, and it never felt right, even when the plot twist was revealed. I'll accept that the game is much better written and has a lot more substance to it than the bulk of English-translated bishoujo games, but a masterpiece of literature it isn't by any stretch of the imagination. |

Then again, the same goes for many popular game stories (both mainstream and ero). These businesses just haven't matured to the point where established authors want in, so it's pointless to expect marvelous work. Quote:

Maybe it's because it's among the limited number of commercially-translated visual novels with a decent focus on story. Another game that a lot of people seem to like is Crescendo. And I can't for the life of me see WHY.
Then again, Kana is also TakaJun's favourite VN (of which he's played, what, over a hundred?), and he probably played the original Japanese version of it too, so my theory doesn't really work. Maybe I just missed something. |
