It doesn't need to have happened in the same title for them to have done both numerous times.

And those DVDs were the dumbest ****ing idea ever. The guy that came up with the idea and the ones that okayed it have no business trying to market visual novels. They should have translated the PC versions and removed the ero content (along with releasing a version that has the ero content intact) instead.

After their little screw ups, they should have re-released those titles in a better format, because as it is, English readers are stuck with them.

Really? I really liked the Hourglass of Summer. It was great and really tense.

As good as it was, I'm a quick reader and definitely hated the forced reading speed of the DVD games.

I sure people would agree with this. Hourglass of Summer has a superb storyline and graphics are very good too. Maybe the most played Hirameki product ever. ^.^ hehehe.

If it hadn't been for the DVD game Phantom of Inferno I probably wouldn't have gotten into VNs.
I think DVD games were a novel idea, just with too many limitations.
I heard Blu-Ray and HD-DVD have a lot more freedom with menus, scripting etc, I wouldn't mind seeing more animeplayDVDs if Blu-Ray or HD-DVD could match the PC versions.

I compared Phantom of Inferno DVD and Phantom Integration PC and I'd definitely say I loved PhantomDVD more, since everything was voiced and it had tons of special effects. Now only if one could skip ahead when desired like in the PC version...

Question

1st I have to get this out of the way.... I _really_ do hate the AnimePlay DVDs. I'll like to read at my own speed when I am reading a novel (visual or normal book), having the speed set for me is a major NO. (even though I have Hourglass of Summer and Amusement Park, I haven't played either because of this)

Any way, what's with the 2 extremes while making VNs?, they are either Adult Only or All ages. Why aren't there major title* that produce Mature contains (which are allowed on consoles). I don't mind the VN having nudity or fanservice, but VNs seem to either have porn or nothing!!!!!

Any body have any idea why they have the 2 extremes?

* I know that there are some smaller title that do this

Hirameki's 'Phantom of Inferno' just about fits that, from what I've heard. The version they sell has no H in it, but the story itself is relatively 'dark'.

Otherwise, all-ages visual novels (that are all-ages versions of H visual novels) will still usually carry over the mature aspects of the original games other than the H, e.g. Fate/stay Night: Realta Nua. In addition, visual novels like Clannad really are only suited towards a mature audience despite lacking what is generally considered inappropriate material for minors. The stories are typically suited towards mature gamers even if the content doesn't require it.

Disclosure: I have never played Phantom of Inferno, so that was pure guesswork.

Assassinations, betrayals and plenty of guns.
I'd agree that Phantom of Inferno suits the description.

I'm playing Phantom Inferno right now and the "mature" label fits perfectly. Some situations clearly tell or show that but I have to say is that I'm enjoying it a lot. I don't really mind the format as long as I can play it but the lack of Cg gallery and text speed does hurt the game >__>

Note with books you often have depictions of sex or violence in middle school libraries.

With visual media you can get away with depictions of massacres or alien heads exploding, but you cannot depict lovemaking.

So I think the true divide in media between "all-ages" and "mature" in terms of content lies between picture books or short stories with 100pt fonts and larger works with smaller text. In visual media, that fine dividing line lies somewhere between Barney and Rugrats (yes Rugrats can be mature... sometimes).

To me, all the ideas that go on in my head are really for a mature audience. So even if I did not produce a visual novel with sex or violence, it will still contain politics, religion, and other charged stuff that the MA label would still suit such things better.

The problem with Japanese visual novels is that you have all these loli highschoolers getting into situations more appropriate for the college-aged. And worse, they seem to gain wisdom contrary to getting further messed up and having stunted development as one would naturally expect.

Oh yeah, I definately agree. I's like sitting through something where the people speak too slow and you have to fast forward every 10 secs, no, make that 5. Sorry to all those people who like DVD games so much, but I have a really short attention span. Most of the time I watch anime at 2x speed XD. One my my fave things about visual novels is that you can go at any speed you want without distupting the background music, and DVD games just take away all that.
