Default [Kanon] How do you guys think about....

How do you guys think about one of Japanese people's unique culture that people CAN date or even marry their own family members? Not their brother or sister but cousin relation Like Yuuich and Nayuki.

Is there any other country that has similar culture like Japan's?

This probably is not true, but the rumour I heard is that Kanon anime hasn't been licensed by western because of its content, which is showing love between a family member (Yuuich and Nayuki of course).

PS:
LOL one of my stupid friend have pointed out that AIR won't be coming to U.S. because of Yukito's child abusing content. (Yukito striking Michiru's head really hard..) XP

I thought it was legal to marry a cousin in most parts of the world. It certainly is in the UK, and it also seems to be perfectly fine in 26 US states.

Seriously, I've never thought of the Yuuichi/Nayuki pairing as particularly odd. Games where people have relationships with adopted sisters or half-sisters, sure, those are a bit off - but I didn't realise cousins were particularly controversial till I looked it up just now and found a lot of Americans getting up-tight about that sort of relationship. :p

Right with you on Yukito, though. Round here we have a special term for the sort of man who goes round showing little girls his dolly... it's normally about 10 years. ;)

I don't think Kanon has ever even entered consideration for coming here. How often do datesim anime come here at all? Part of the reason is that honestly at least 90% of the audience is datesim audience or those who would then take a look at the game it came from. Air likewise won't for those reasons.

As for cousin marriages, they happen, but some people joke about them from a genetic standpoint, though IMO they're fine from a genetic standpoint compared to bro/sis... they shouldn't be happening ALL the time but the ocassional one is fine. In fact, I'm a big supporter of Yuuichi/Nayuki ... and I have relatives who are cousins who are married.

I don't think the incest thing is keeping Kanon from coming here.
Onegai Twins has the same vibe.
So is Koi Kaze, and that's freakin creepy in incest vibes.

It is perfectly alright to marry your cousin in my religion.

But hey, one of the issues when Card Captor Sakura was hacked when ported to the US was the characters Li Syaoran and Li Meilin - they should've been cousins, and Meilin has a crush on Li, but Nirvana renamed her Meilin Rae and denounced her bloodline. So it complicates things, in some cases the changes are even unnecessary.

Really, if people are becoming open with shounen/shoujo ai, why not this. It's more often a clash of customs and ideals anyway.

My opinion on Nayuki and Yuuichi is that the relationship's used as a tool to make him come back home to Japan after 7 years. Frankly there's no... connection if you may, if they weren't. And Akiko would've been gettable too

I think it's more likely that the licensors need to see a market for Kanon (one much greater than the current fanbase who watched it on fansubs). However, it is rumored that someone, like Rightstuf, was looking into it. It's probably just a rumor, though.

Hello, I'm new here but have been watching the board for a really long time and have so far played Kanon, KimiNozo and AkaneManiax. I wanted to reply to Zalas' comment - I braved Gravitation fangirls at the RightStuf panel at Otakon 2004 and asked if, given their record of licensing love simulation-based games, would they license other shows like Kanon or KimiNozo. The panelist asked me to repeat the name 'Kanon,' and one of the aides whispered something to them, and she said "we can't comment on one of those shows at the moment, but look for an announcement in the coming year". I'm glad to hear somebody else was paying attention there ^_^

Honestly, not really. I mean, I wouldn't go for one of my cousins, but it's not as if Nayuki's his sister or anything. I mean, actually, if you don't go for Nayuki, as far as I can tell, she acts like a really concerned sister (*CoughShioricough* *Not sure if Spoiler, feel free to hide it if so*), but if you go for her, she changes to be a possible lover, so it appears that she really loves Yuuchi and will change or adapt however it is required to help him. Unless it cuts in on her sleep time.

If I recall correctly, in the U.S., marriage between first cousins is not permitted, but marriage between second cousins is.

The reasoning behind this is that while siblings share roughly half their genetic information and first cousins share roughly 1/8, second cousins share a far more miniscule amount.

Woah .. whoever made that web site could possibly have some latent issues that they need to deal with. Meh .. I ain't got anything against it anyway. Would be nice if it showed more than just the US though.

Hey, love the nick! Looks really cool. Anyhow, it's most probably just me but I've never heard of Rightstuf.
What game->anime series have they translated? Interesting how the speaker didn't know of Kanon .. or maybe they asked for the name to be repeated because it seemed familiar. Hmmm

Right Stuf picked up titles that most wouldnt have expected to see in the US, such as To Heart and Comic Party (well... both are Leaf dating sims so who knows o-o... Kanon might stand a shot)

as far as I know, it is not possible to marry your blood realted sister (1 perent or both), and any women higher they you in the family tree. Other wise every woman out there is legal. (my own older brother is acutaly married to one of our cousins, the daugter of our mother's sister).

that fact that this is not the case in the USA is a supprise to me

P.S. I beleave that in some cultures and religons the type of sisters you have might have expand beyond blood.

For purposes of comparison, the legal position in Australia is that a sister and brother cannot marry (regardless of whether they are related by blood). Cousins, however, seem to be fine.

Relevant extract from the Marriage Act 1961 (Cth) s23(2)(b):
http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/c...96185/s23.html

A rather dated article for those interested:
http://marriage.about.com/b/a/066720.htm

The standard disclaimers about my lack of legal qualifications apply.
