Anyone suggest a real tear-jerker or two?

I've read/played a few of these, and I'm looking for a really good tear-jerker to play/read. H or non-H, doesn't matter to me. Questionable content or pairings and whatnot? Bring it on. Anyone willing to suggest a couple to me?

zalas 2008-10-03 08:08

First Question: In what language?

Kiesman 2008-10-03 09:34

Yeah I probably should have specified that. English patches are much good. I haven't gotten around to learning Japanese yet.

2008-10-03 09:57

I don't know what kind of titles you have played, but let's go!

1. Planetarian: Chiisana Hoshi no Yume
English patch by insani, kinetic novel (straight out story without branches) for around three hours of reading time. If you like it try other KEY's title such as Clannad, Kanon, and Air

2. Narcissu
Translated 90MB doujin by insani, kinetic novel, three hours, kind of legend

3. Commercial H-games such as Kana Little Sister and Crescendo
You have to invest lots of time for these titles, but they're tear-jerker all right

I'm kinda lazy at putting links so google them yourself ;D

Anyway, apparently I know more about manga titles (and few anime) so if you want tear jerker recommendation for these, just ask or PM me. Though I don't know if I could help much.

Asceai 2008-10-03 14:12

Raide probably covered almost all of them, with the exception of ONE~kagayaku kisetsu e~.

Since I don't know any other English-translated titles, here's a list of decent tear-jerkers that aren't:
Moshimo Ashita ga Hare Naraba
G - Senjou no Maou (you'll cry at the end. Unless you're a robot. Hell, even if you're a robot)
Sore wa Maichiru Sakura no Youni (Cherry Petals Fall Like Teardrops)

I just finished Kawana Misaki's path at ONE 4 hours after the post. Since it's not a game where I have finished completely, it's kind of unpolite to recommend it isn't? Just like recommending a movie you haven't watch.. ^^

Asceai-san know Japanese and plays a lot so obviously you have more knowledge at VN. May I ask if popular (non-KEY) titles such as Cross+Channel, Shuffle, D.C., and To Heart 2 counts as tear-jerker? How about those at your top ten list in G - Senjou no Maou thread?

Asceai 2008-10-03 18:55

I didn't like D.C. that much, and there's no way it could have emotionally affected me anyway. Same with Shuffle!, and to a lesser extent, To Heart 2 (which I just didn't find sad anyway)

Cross Channel is pretty sad, but not to the point where you'd actually start crying during it. SWAN SONG is about the same.

Scanning down my current (slightly out of date) top-25 list, the VNs that I would classify as tear-jerkers/nakiges, even somewhat weak ones, are:
G-Senjou no Maou
Syarin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo
Cross Channel
SWAN SONG
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
AIR
Narcissu -side 2nd-
Gin'iro
Ashita no Kimi to Autameni
Haruka ni Aogi, Uruwashino
Koi no Bashi

Thanks for sharing the list. It'll be a good reference in the future^^

KEY's works are quite varying in perception I guess. Asceai-san prefer AIR, while my friends laughed at me for giving perfect score to Clannad instead of Kanon which they thought way much better series. Off topic for a bit Clannad After Story episode one has been out for those who didn't know. It got twenty four episodes so Suzumiya Haruhi fans has to wait longer for season two.

Asceai-san have you watch KgNE anime? Do you think it's worth to watch? How does it compare to the VN format? It's been on my dvd collection for way too long already.

Asceai 2008-10-03 23:15

Actually, on my top 25 list, Clannad occupies a higher place than AIR - 5th and 14th* respectively (but it didn't get on the nakige list because I don't consider it a nakige). Kanon doesn't even get on the list, awesome as it is.

I have not watched the KgNE anime, and I don't really plan to either. No specific reason; there's lots of anime series' I haven't watched and probably never will.

*chances are, those will drop to 6th and 15th if Moshiraba keeps being as awesome as it is; I refuse to put stuff I haven't finished entirely up on that list, though.

I know a girl who didn't cry at the end of this game, apparently it "didn't do it for her" (she cried at some of the other chapters though)

I too recommend giniro. Some people find Muvluv alternative can be quite tear-jerking at times too.

Well, one of the thing that actually made G-Senjou unique is that it's the only nakige I've played where I actually cried _for the protagonist_. It's always for one or more of the girls in everything else.

If I might interject... I watched the KgNE anime a few years ago with a friend (like the whole series in a marathon run) and it was good times. I don't know how it compares to the VN, but it was pretty engaging and dramatic - definitely made me want to see how it all turned out in the end. The characters were almost all well-developed, enough to make you really care about what happened to them.
So, I'd reccomend it. Totally worth watching if you're in the mood for something emotionally engaging.

I strongly recommed you to play Kana~little sister and Clannad. They are the best visual novels I have ever played.

2008-10-04 23:57

With Clannad I played through the 'unofficial patch' in hongfire, scrambling with love through the jungle of unedited text in After Story. Just few days ago I noticed that there's such drama over leakage.. Hopefully one day the final patch (along with Kanon) would be released^^

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien.. One more anime to list along with Clannad After Story, Chaos;Head (both soon be released translated game and anime), Gundam00 season two and Toradora!

Sara 2008-10-05 06:10

Kana Little Sister, obviously. ;)
