I'd say Planetarian, but it's really easy to win a race of one, if you know what I mean... | |||

Which drama are you referring to anyway? I know that a certain hit is sometimes accused of being a Kana ripoff. Similarly, Japanese otaku accuse its follow-up of copying Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien. |

Honestly, I have no idea what my favourite eroges are. It changes every now and then as I replay things. Just to be safe I'll name 'Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo' and 'Haru no Ashioto'. Games like 'Koibito Doushide Surukoto Zenbu' that I like _now_ will probably slip out of favour later, but akabeesoft games never get old. I still really like 'Tamayura' but can't really list it because, from a critical eye, it doesn't really work out anywhere near the same level. |

As for Kana, I guess it's a hit or miss thing. For me, the essence of kana little sister is in that ONE SINGLE SENTENCE. Yes, I found the whole story boring from the begining to, well, nearly the end. And that single sentence made the whole story of kana flashing before my eyes in a mili-second as I burst into tears. (And YES, I have seen many J-dramas before such as one litre of tears, and YES, I have seen many K-dramas including the one which COPIED the storyline of KANA) But kana is never one my favourite eroge. Why? Because the bulk of the story is boring for me. Maybe because it's too old. |

As for Crescendo, I actually enjoyed it, but I think it highlights the dearth of decent English VNs that it's so commonly recommended to fans of Kana. There's _nothing_ that the two games have in common besides the fact that they focus more on the story than on the sex. |

Maybe it's because it's among the limited number of commercially-translated visual novels with a decent focus on story. Another game that a lot of people seem to like is Crescendo. And I can't for the life of me see WHY. Then again, Kana is also TakaJun's favourite VN (of which he's played, what, over a hundred?), and he probably played the original Japanese version of it too, so my theory doesn't really work. Maybe I just missed something. |

Then again, the same goes for many popular game stories (both mainstream and ero). These businesses just haven't matured to the point where established authors want in, so it's pointless to expect marvelous work. Quote:

I actually never understood why Kana was spoken so highly of. I bought the game a few years ago after my friend had been raving about it, but the story never really drew me in, and I frequently interrupted play to browse the internet and switch to other graphic novels. I can understand someone who's never really come across a story of that nature before being moved to tears by it, but really, the loved-one-dying-of-a-terrible-disease plot is the most overused storyline in Asian soap operas today, and in most cases it's handled better than in Kana because TV producers don't feel the need to insert pseudo-incest into the equation (seriously, did ANYONE find the H scenes in Kana arousing?). Add to that, I didn't really feel like Kana captured the sense of total desperation and the struggle between hope and despair that comes with actually having a loved one who's suffering from a terminal disease. For mine, the plot focused too much on the protagonist's growing feelings for Kana, and it never felt right, even when the plot twist was revealed. I'll accept that the game is much better written and has a lot more substance to it than the bulk of English-translated bishoujo games, but a masterpiece of literature it isn't by any stretch of the imagination. |

Then you really should read I'm not sure about the 'happy' part of this description though... I'd also suggest reading Narcissu (kudos to Haeleth for his unparalleled translation of this little gem), Planetarian and maybe Tsukihime (with non-ero patch). P.S. Welcome aboard. ;) |
