Default Exact Date Displays in Visual Novels

How come a lot of visual novels have them? From my observations, it seems that for school settings particularly, the date display is useful for knowing when the weekends are, letting the player know in advance that the particular day won't take place in a classroom setting.

Seasons and particular times of the year are more important to the Japanese than they are to most Westerners.

It's also a lot more realistic than going "day 1" "day 2"...
