Default Food: An Important Theme in Visual Novels?

Fate Stay Night: Taiyaki
Kanon: Taiyaki
Air: Ramen Set
Clannad: Bread

Just a coincidence? Or is food a truly important theme in visual novels?

I think it's because people are just generally hungry... like I am right now...

Fate/ stay night...

I thought that eating mana or souls were more important food themes than taiyaki. :p

I think food is a character thing. Something to give to a character. Heck. Kanon's full of it. Nayuki's strawberries, Makoto's nikuman, Shiori's ice cream...etc. Though...I could be wrong concerning other visual novels...*shifty eyes*

I can't think of the name of it off the top of my head, but altough it was because of lack of money, in Narcissu didn't they eat the same thing almost every time?

Favourite foods (好物), along with favourite phrases and funny ways of talking (口癖), is a hangover from the piecemeal character design philosophy that was popular from the late 90s as a way to flesh out and give a little individuality to the heroines without putting much of a load on the plot.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a 'theme', but it's certainly something you commonly see in games of this sort. Key's next main heroine Kamikita-tan, for example, is a lover of sweets =3

Not just favourite foods, eitherにゅ. Cookery descriptions are quite popular as a way of adding bulk to a story without having to advance the plotにゅ. Look at the multiple pages you get every time Shirou cooks in F/snにゅ. Even Kanon runs to several screens when Yuuichi cooks yakisobaにゅ.

・・・にゅ。

And I think favourite food is there so some dialog can be spent on talking about them. Or just another reason so that the player can get closer to the heroine(Like, treating her a favourite food of hers.)?

Though, some tend to get the carving for the food too extreme.

:Looks at Ayu and her Taiyaki theft.:

Well, at least Nayuki does not start sprinting out of Hyaka(sp?) with a strawberry sundae, or Shiori with a cart of vanilla ice creams, or even Mai with a Nyuudon....

Now that gives me a rather crazy idea.
