not at all, US releases are much cheaper than Japanese ones so we can afford more games this way ^_^

I'm surprised they are telling all this before the panel.

It's also a nice way for Jast to save money by having fan translators do all the work for free or near enough free (any money paid is probably nothing compared to what they would've paid for professionals).

Also, yes this is boring. TL Wiki is pretty much like a crystal ball showing what Jast will licence in the future. So if you want Jast to licence something, just set up a fake page on TL Wiki. Maybe they'll fall for it, buy the licence and once they realise no one was actually working on the game it'll be too late.

They are getting paid actually. JAST could get sued if they just stole their translation.

And most professional VN translators are paid a ridiculously low amount of money for what they do anyway. It's not like literature translators who get paid loads for translating the latest Haruki Murakami novel or something.

Re-read his post. They are getting paid, but less than JAST would pay non-fan-translators. If you've already translated the entire thing, it's either some free money or a C&D - it's not hard to guess which most translators would choose.

He said we were "probably" getting paid less than what JAST would pay freelancers to translate a game from scratch - in other words, baseless speculation.

Even if that were the case, the fact that they're not just taking the translations and using them for free - which they are well within their rights to do, assuming they have a license for the game in question - speaks volumes, I would say.

By the way, Django, for one, is indeed being translated from scratch, so it's not as if all of the titles are simply fan translations they're picking up after the fact. Sumaga has yet to see a fan release either.

Rather than being paid nothing to make a patch that a small group of people will read (and a even smaller group will actually buy the game they love so much) the translators are now getting paid (and resume boosted), acknowledged by the makers of the game, and read by a wider audience. Seems like a win all around.

If you're going to accuse people of 'baseless speculation', the least you can do is get your own facts straight. Translations are copyrighted, even if their public distribution was unapproved/illegal. Sure, JAST could grab a fan translation and use it for free, but they definitely wouldn't be in their rights to do so. Regardless of their arrangements with the game's actual owners.

why is there so much hate for fan translations been picked up and made available officially?
  • The JAST/MG release is a lot cheaper then trying to get the Japanese release and applying the patch to it (assuming the game is still being sold new and not 2nd hand).
  • The JAST/MG release will be uncensored.
  • Whatever the fan translator is getting paid is a lot better then what they were getting paid before (zero, not even ad revenue).
  • Paid fairly or not, the translator is happy... what is the problem that people, on the side lines, are having with it?

if a title was coming then it is still coming, now officially instead of coming through a gray area of the law. Plus there was never a guarantee that the fan translator would finish the project or finish it fast. And there wasn't any guarantee that JAST/MG would have picked up another title*, had they not found this title half done by the fan translators.

* keep in mind the number of titles they are announcing, if they announced 10 titles now, it doesn't mean they would have announced 10 different titles had they not had the help of the fan translators.

Not to mention that with lower translation costs (assuming that buying an existing translation is indeed cheaper than doing it from scratch), the games would probably also be cheaper than they otherwise would've been.

Apart from the obvious 'some people need something to bash', perhaps the 'hate' stems from a feeling that one should be able to get everything for free. Pirating a Japanese game and getting a free translation patch possibly feels more 'free' than pirating an already localized game from a Western company?

that what I was thinking as well, but it didn't add up! Why is pirating the Japanese game feel more free then pirating the JAST/MG release!

strange as it might be, I guess this really is the only sensible reason that can be seen
