agilis:

my wc script

Code:
import os, os.path, sys

if __name__ == "__main__":

    script = ""
    sfile = open("0.txt", 'r')
    script += sfile.read()
    sfile.close()
    li = ""
    wordcount = 0
    scenecount = 0
    clickcount = 0
    script = script.split('\n')

    for line in script:
        if len(line) != 0 and line[0] in "`":
            clickcount += line.count("@")
            clickcount += line.count("\\")
            scenecount += line.count("\\")
            li = line.split(" ")
            wordcount +=  len(li)

    del script

    result = "This script has %d words." % wordcount
    result1 = "\nThis script has %d clicks." % clickcount
    result2 = "\nThis script has %d scenes." % scenecount
    print result
    print result1
    print result2

    lint = open('%d_%d.txt' % (wordcount, clickcount), 'w')
    lint.write(result)
    lint.write(result1)
    lint.write(result2)
    lint.close()

    sys.exit()
is showing this results for narcissu:

Code:
This script has 49927 words.
This script has 4584 clicks.
This script has 4408 scenes.
but of course there are two translations and comments included.

And in case people wanted to compare, the typical Japanese light novel has on the order of 100,000 Japanese characters. Some have less, like Lucky Star Online, and some have more, like the last volume of Owari no Chronicle. A typical eroge is usually around 5-10 light novels in length.

agilis: truth is that I modified my friends code to serve my need (he made kirikiri wc script), I am just beginner in python.
But for your point why I added click and scene count... well... this is only main (universal) wc script for the nscripter games.
I have other wc script (modified) which counts even more things, like:

Code:
import os, os.path, sys

if __name__ == "__main__":

    script = ""
    sfile = open("0.txt", 'r')
    script += sfile.read()
    sfile.close()
    li = ""
    wordcount = 0
    scenecount = 0
    clickcount = 0
    bcgcount = 0
    mp3count = 0
    wavcount = 0
    script = script.split('\n')

    for line in script:
        if len(line) != 0 and line[0] in "`":
            clickcount += line.count("@")
            clickcount += line.count("\\")
            scenecount += line.count("\\")
            li = line.split(" ")
            wordcount +=  len(li)
	else:
	    bcgcount += line.count("bg")
	    mp3count += line.count("mp3loop")
	    wavcount += line.count("wave ")

    del script

    result = "This script has %d words." % wordcount
    result1 = "\nThis script has %d clicks." % clickcount
    result2 = "\nThis script has %d scenes." % scenecount
    result3 = "\nThis script has %d background changes." % bcgcount
    result4 = "\nThis script has %d music changes." % mp3count
    result5 = "\nThis script has %d sound effects." % wavcount
    print result
    print result1
    print result2
    print result3
    print result4
    print result5

    lint = open('%d_%d.txt' % (wordcount, clickcount), 'w')
    lint.write(result)
    lint.write(result1)
    lint.write(result2)
    lint.write(result3)
    lint.write(result4)
    lint.write(result5)
    lint.close()

    sys.exit()
(that will give results for narcissu as:
Code:
This script has 49927 words.
This script has 4584 clicks.
This script has 4408 scenes.
This script has 922 background changes.
This script has 66 music changes.
This script has 643 sound effects.
).

The reason is that I am currently making my own game in onscripter (sort of practice) so I just want to be updated about my game... and it can be used with any game so that's how I count words.

Remember, f/sn and tsukihime had one script file. If I recall correctly one of them had ~860kb of text.

Clannad has A_LOT kb of text... I think there was a topic on Clannad's length which said it was 102,551 (characters|words) long.

Did anyone find the exact wordcount for Ever17 (official English translation)?
It's nice to have a tabulation of the longest visual novels available in English (for e-penis purposes, etc.)

Actually, it's 102,000+ lines. Probably, the average words per line is 7-10 words. Not sure how many are consistents (or repeated) lines, but I think it's around 5% to 15% percent.

The most repeated line is of course...

Hmm... Only 12 games with 3+MB scripts, only one of those pre-2003 and only one post-2006. I wonder if game sizes are on the way back down?

Maybe they realized that most people (aka the market) don't want stories which are strechted beyond tearing apart by filler "Oh my what shall we have for breakfast"-episodes in between.

The 'market' may think that, but I've played half the games over 3mb in that list, and they didn't seem junked up with unnecessary filler at all. Games that did have far too much (needless) text seem more around the 1.5mb mark, in general. The larger titles usually fill the space quite well.

All I know is that Higurashi has slightly more than 3millions jp characters, which are akin to about 1.2 to 1.4 million words in French.
Of course, that includes all tips, minigames, and machine script.
It still takes about a month to read it. Unless you read 14 hours a day of course.

Higurashi's listed on that site, actually!

The first entry, ひぐらしのなく頃に, is (I assume) Onikakushi-hen to Himatsubushi-hen. It is listed at 2.21mb.
The third entry is explicitly listed as Meakashi-hen to Matsuribayashi-hen. It is listed at 3.30mb.
The second entry is Rei, listed at 0.32. Added all together, that comes to 5.83mb, which is 2.9 million Japanese characters, so that sounds about right. Holy crap that's huge =p

I would expect AGE's Muvluv Alternative to be one of the longest VNs.

But after I had a quick browse on that site -> it's not on there at all???
