Default Another Moderator? (to combat spam)

Haeleth... for those rare times when your not around, may I make a suggestion for another moderator, as I havent seen Keisuke in a while, and since the Wind debacle, the spam on the forum has been seeing a steady increase.

Since automaticed spam detection is never perfect and we dont want to disable guest voting, I think it would be a good idea to add another human spam killer =P.

Hell... a spam bot posted my avatar as a post ><.... I dont know whether to take thats as a compliement or not XD.

Is there a captcha plugin for phpbb? Perhaps that'd work.

I was thinking more along the lines of a nuclear device, you know, the type that desecrates the land for longer than my lifetime.

Yeah, the spam is getting rather annoying. Apparently the "are you human?" question isn't doing the trick anymore...

I'm really against captcha. I've always found it quite a pain to figure out what I was looking at, especially the differances between caps and not caps on captchas. Plus, I'm typically lazy and dont post on something that requires me to write some fancy code.

There are better ways to get around spam then captcha. Mabbe a varient of "I am a robot" or something might work. It served its purpose quite well for sometime till someone figure out how to break it, so mabbe with some modification it can be useful again.

Some of these spams look familiar to whats been getting spammed over on Blade Engine's forum quite a bit lately.

Isn't that all we need, another VN & H-G hating spammer hitting the forums, around and about, again.

It might be coincidence, but it looks like the real activity is inversely proportional to the amount of spam...

I like the yes/no/maybe box.
This isn't a big forum, i think you can get by for a while longer with just a small modification to the existing code.

1) Randomise the form field name.
2) either...
- Randomise the select 'value' field also, and have the visible text of the options be selected randomly from a large list of options. Things like "Indeed i am", "That is correct", etc etc.
or
- Use three radio buttons, again with randomised names, and have the yes/no/maybe text as images next to the buttons. The only problem with this is it hampers text-based browsing, though perhaps the spam bots wouldn't be clever enough to check an alt tag and you could get away with that...

Just changing the options probably wouldn't do it; I imagine the spam bots are just brute forcing the thing and trying to post under each possible combination. Changing some values alone probably wouldn't do anything.

Either the spambot doing this is broken or it's an actual person doing it.

I somehow feel guilty since this happened after I finally registered on the forums.

And the particular computer I'm using seems to have about 7-8 "iffy" processes running.

But I go to other forums and they don't seem to get affected.

Is there a way to have an automated process where the board can figure out from heuristics what's spam and what's not by having a moderator always flag the spam ones? Since it seems to work for email, I imagine there may be some way to do it...

Making guests unable to post links to anything would probably work.
