Depends what it's expensive to obtain wherever you live normally.

You could always fall back on the time-honoured trick of wandering into the nearest otaku-oriented shop and buying all the cute stuff in sight? ^_^

If you're around Tokyo then just head to Akihabara...
- Character goods : Animate
- Doujin items, comics : Tora no ana
- Games and DVDs : Sofmap has new and second-hand packages

You can find these shops elsewhere but I'll keep this one simple.
Depends on where you are right now, like Haeleth said.

Well the place you live counts here...I'll assume that you can use
trains to move around.

Tora no ana - http://www.toranoana.jp/shop/top.html#akiba
(Shop No1 should be good enough)

Animate - http://www.animate.co.jp/animate/map/east/akihabara/akihabara.html

Sofmap - http://tenpo.sofmap.com/tenpo/shop/tokyo_0.htm
The head shop(本店) is the place.
(The map's lousy, but it's on the right of [2] mark)

This is also the time where you stock up on the cheap anime or game-related goods that are utterly scarce in the place where you're moving to. Sell them on eBay for twice the price you paid (which most assuredly will still be 3/4 to 1/2 the price of what importers are charging) and make cash hand over fist. ^_^

Though, you are limited to 800USD of stuff you can bring out without getting into problems with customs. Well, at least that's the case for my friend coming back from Japan into the US.
