I've had mine for ~2 years, maybe 3...

Having dual monitors, using separate images looks silly; thus I'm left with either generic patterns or specifically dual-monitor walls, and I can't find any of the latter ;_;

I guess 'Japanese language mode' is no substitute for a real Japanese OS after all.
There were serious sound issues when I tried to run it before.

My lappy's widescreen (1680X1050), So i have to make the sizes of mine too big hieght, or too small width.

Keisuke hinted at it in the previous post. It's from Moonlight Lady (no, not tsukihime - that's a different translation).

Does anyone else feel the almost primal need to rotate their desktops every three weeks or so? I know I can't stand the same one for two long...
I have so many great desktop images (mostly from deviantArt before they decided to be more stringent on the copyright stuff) that I couldn't decide on which to display for long periods of time. I got over that dilemma by having my linux machine choose a random wallpaper from a predefined directory and that images change at any chosen interval (30 mins in this case). I think I even got it to change depending on what application you were running, but that was a little overboard.

The best part though, is having the terminal windows translucent so you can see your wallpaper while you work those command lines! I'd really love to post up a screenshot but unfortunately I don't have access to it right now ~_~

As for my windows desktop I run winmatrix xp. Cool stuff having the matrix code running as an active desktop. Just a little buggy with my laptop sometimes. Not often enough for me to want to replace it with a random desktop scheme though. I love the look of the other passengers in the train when they see me working on a DOS shell (green foreground against black backround) with the matrix code flowing in the desktop. You don't see me doing that anymore though ~_~

Desktops... mmm. Nothing terribly exciting from me here.

I've had this one on Cynewulf, my main desktop, for about three years now. Can't be bothered to change it because I nearly always have at least one maximised window: http://haeleth.net/temp/cynewulf.jpg.

Layamon, my Linux testbed, has a more interesting one: http://haeleth.net/temp/layamon.jpg. Although I barely ever look at this either, since I tend to ssh over from Cynewulf instead of actually working directly in XFCE.

I'm thinking I might have to do my own custom wallpaper, which takes quite a bit of work to produce a masterpiece I would be proud to call my own (especially since my creativity capabilities are practically non-existent).

You can try what I do for my laptop: find a 4:3 you like, resize it in photoshop to the pixel height of your monitor, and then tell your display not to stretch it and just use unobtrusive sidebar colors.

or I just found a few nice ones here (http://www.animeast.com/). Their widescreens are 1280 X 768

Becuase I just reformatted, I havent had a chance to replace my Windows Shell yet, so I'm just running my skins through Windows Blinds. Though, normally I use the Lightstep shell.

Longhorn = The New Windows

Actually, that's a bit of a misnomer now: Just as 'Whistler' was finally given the release name 'Windows XP' (and 'Chicago' turned to 'Windows 95', 'Memphis' turned to 'Windows 95', etc.), Longhorn now goes under the release name Vista. It's supposed to give your computer power over orbital spy satellites, shuttle launches in 13 different NSA-approved countries, and includes ballistic-missile trip planning software. Also included are modified Telnet programs to end world hunger, and two open-source cancer curing utilities.

Gaming support in Vista is apparently designed with - you know - people who actually PLAY games in mind, and rumor has it that Vista will be a LOT friendlier to gaming than XP ever was.

Oh, and it's supposed to come out in seven different editions at launch. I kid you not.

Micro$oft Windows (Insert the version here, since ME of corse...) = MotherF----r OS who it's able to use UT in all versions and causes great problems with WarCraft 3, Driver and all good'n'ol DOS games, such Doom or RedNeck Rampage in Win 2k.

Misu: Just wondering, how far away from Microsoft's offices are you?

I'm about five minute drive from Microsoft Main Campus.

Well, July/September is still a long way off, too! I'm actually looking forward to Vista, although I'm sure that it will force me to finally upgrade my beloved Pentium III.

Actually, Vista runs on my Pentium III 1GHz perfectly fine. As long as you have 512MB of RAM, you should be fine.

GreatSaintLouis
2005-11-02, 23:30
Well, I've got the 512 RAM covered, but I'm only running an 866 PIII, so we'll see. Then again, I did manage to get Half-Life 2 running at a respectable framerate, so who knows what could be done with a little tweaking. I hear the UI is going to be a lot more dependent on graphics accelerator cards, anyways, so maybe that'll take a bit of stress off of the system - I've got a decent enough GeForce FX.

I don't suppose the beta you're running is one that can be aquired by any sort of legit means? I know Microsoft sometimes sells beta or release candidate software for user evaluation, and I'd certainly like to give Vista a spin (provided I could downgrade back to XP if it didn't work just right).
How's the stability?

It took a good bit of tweaking, but I managed to get it to the point where I could be from my Windows desktop to actively moving in-game in about 5 minutes. Load times between levels or whatnot tended to take a minute or less. Granted, my graphical setting were fairly low, but HL2's strength is that the engine is super-scalabe and the game manages to look amazing on nearly any setting.

How's the stability?

Actually, I do have the beta for Vista acquired in both means. I run a legit beta that I recieved by through an invitation only forum from Microsoft. I run the legit copy on my laptop. I'm also running a *cough* semi *cough* legit copy on my desktop. The desktop one is running the bleeding new beta of Vista (i forgot the number) that came about a week ago, while the laptop is running the latest stable build (5231). As for stability, Vista is quite good and keeping crashed programs from not crashing anything else, besides the common error of if explorer crashes, then all your IE windows and your explorer windows go down with it. The intial stable beta (5219) had some SERIOUS issues with a lot of laptops, but that seems to be resolved in the new stable beta. Its a bit on the slow side right now, but its running custom drivers for everything underneath the sun (as no hardware companies have "released" Vista drivers), and there are some other issues. As for the GUI, you can strip it down very well and run it either via the GPU or software render it through the CPU, so it gives you choices depending on what kind of hardware your running.

Overall, its shaping up to be a decent OS. I found some incredible imporvements from Windows XP on Vista, especially in the department of laptops and mobile computing (but I'm mainly focusing on testing Vista in the moble environment, so thats probably why I havent noticed many of the desktop environment imporvements).

If you want to acquire a legit copy of Vista, you need to either be enrolled in the MSDN (Microsoft Developers Network (which you can buy a subscription too, so I guess you could 'technically' buy a Vista beta by buying a subscription to MSDN, but it aint cheap)) or be invited to a Microsoft Vista fair, or live in Redmond WA ^~.

If you want non-legit, well I'm sure you can figure that one out yourself ^^;;....

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of - MSDN subscriptions do not come at a student price, sadly. :( And regardless of any views I might have concerning beta software and true piracy, I don't think I'm going to touch a non-approved version of Vista, not even with a 10-foot pole. Talbain

Awesome, I thought I was the only fan of the Aria series. ^^

As for XP, there's really a rather great version floating out in torrent land. Cuts out a lot of the inane stuff that Windows XP normally tries to install. (It's supposably a corporate end-user edition of XP Pro, but I'm pretty sure it's just been hacked to reflect it.)

Misu
2005-11-07, 23:55
We're 'technically' not supposed to discuss shady topics relating to piratism here, but I just want to clarify for those who are interested.

I own a legal copy of Windows XP Professional Enterprise Edition (The corporate end-user edition) and it is exactly the same as the normal Pro, with exceptions to CD-Keys and verification. So any other version that claims its a corporate user version that has things stripped from it is just a hacked Pro version or hacked Enterprise version.

Talbain
2005-11-08, 05:38
I think the terrible thing about that is that pretty much everything on the web is stolen anyways. It's a bit backwards in logic to not want to discuss something just because Bill Gates might get mad.

Haeleth
2005-11-08, 05:47
If that was the logic, it would indeed be odd. But this particular rule is nothing to do with Bill Gates, and everything to do with companies like Key.

I translate games without permission. I justify this on the grounds that it encourages people to buy the games who would not otherwise have bought them. That may or may not be an illusion, but if it is, it's an important one that might ultimately make all the difference between copyright holders turning a blind eye or deciding to shut me down.

Therefore, discussing piracy is not OK, because if this site ends up being seen as a place where piracy is encouraged, everyone who is interested in my translations will suffer.

I hope that makes more sense now. (And even if it doesn't, please take the discussion to private messages, and keep this thread clean for talking about desktops.)

You know, if one was skilled enough (and crazy enough), you could hack the registry to change just about anything. It's possible, and I know people who have done it. (I did the registry hacking thing once, but that was to remove spyware.)

I'm not crazy enough to modify the Registry. Last time I made it I needed re-install the windows...
I use System Mechanic 5.5 [30-day trial - except if you use a good serial (And, of course, breaking Copyright and the same enterprises Blablabla... I'm tired of hear/read such thing 10000 times!) But don't waste your time searching. you won't find it easily] for system Startup "tweak".

Windows Start => Run: =>"regedit" only for delete uninstalled software registry.

But I made the win98 works with Norton 2k4 and Norton Internet Security 2k2 and about 75% free memory, but in "Eclipse SDK 3.0" times, I need MUCH MORE memory... T_T

see (?) ya! (Will be, will be?)

Most unfortunate of me, i have enough wallpapers that I could cycle a change every 8 hours and just barely go through them all in an entire year. Or even once a day, it'd take nearly 3 years to go through them all.

This will let you modify pretty much all the services running in the background on your system. There are lots of things that you can disable with basically no consequence. The easiest way to access and look through your background programs is to go to run -> services.msc

Figured it'd draw attention.

I had one ask me via PM, but i'll keep it simple.

Wallpaper was downloaded from Minitokyo.

The absence of a taskbar is due to ObjectDock, shareware http://www.stardock.com, which is set on Auto-hide and disable taskbar. I actually have two docks, one for the system tray that comes off the right-bottom of the screen, and the main bar off the bottom.

The weather and clocks are thanks to Konfabulator, free. http://www.konfabulator.com

Wow, what pretty desktops you all have.

I get to stare at this as my desktop:
http://shia.wsyntax.com/~raymond/pictures/desktop20051127_real.png
(mainly because my video cards don't have enough memory to hold a wallpaper, and programs like to crash when I have one, although whenever I'm actually using the thing, it looks more like this: http://shia.wsyntax.com/~raymond/pictures/desktop20051127_in_use.png)

(WM in use is ion3--http://modeemi.cs.tut.fi/~tuomov/ion/)

Was my wallpaper when I had one:

Does anyone know of a program that's similar to object dock, but for the system tray? I've tried to use object dock for doing this, but haven't had any success. (or rather, I can get it to show the taskbar, but not the system tray, and I'm not really sure why.)

Only ObjectDock Pro shows the system tray. :(

That's a pretty nice view from your window. I get to look at the townhouses across the street that are three times more luxurious than my flat, and cost three times as much too.

I was going to ask where is that... then staring at it for a while longer, i was like, "Oh wtf!, I recognize that!"

Wheres your place? Your like right above the UW football field or something o-o. Either way, excellent shot, very nice sem-sunny lighting! Very hard to get in our state ^^;;.

Heh. I suspected there might be a few people here that would be able to locate that view ;) I'm in McMahon Hall (map (http://www.washington.edu/home/maps/northcentral.html?MCM)). It's a bit north of the football field, but still pretty close.

The lighting happened to be just right to complement the shade of gold that the trees were a few weeks ago... it was one of those moments that I was glad I had my camera nearby.

It's simple. Create a new dock, to be placed wherever you want, and open the dock preferences for that one. Under the Dock Contents group, select Show System Tray instead of Show Running Tasks

I don't really understand Object Dock. Very good program, but seems to cause a lot of problems for other programs while it's running.

I'd say that window view is pretty special! I just have buildings to look at from my dorm room.

At home im surrounded by trees, so i don't exactly have a nice "landscape" view like that to look out on.

... though i must admit my college has this one lane thats reallly nice to walk down during spring or fall... maybe ill show it one time.

Actual Japanese Windows is really awful, it's all katakanas (スタート, マイコンピュータ, etc.) You can probably change those in the Registry but it's not worth it.

For the record I changed the title so I would learn the kanji for 始まる :)

The Win desktop is composed by several family photos. I don't need to show ya my desk because I don't wanna. ^_^

inuyasha9854

technically, it's supposed to be Arnold (pronounced are-nold)

They all use Ahnold because of his accent, pronounced as written ah-nold.

2006-01-20, 10:55
Yes, but "are" and "ah" ah pronounced identically, ahn't they?

Not really in American english.

Think of 'ah' as in father. And 'are' as just saying the letter 'r'

i think that pronunciation pattern is one of the commonalities anywhere in the USA.....but i could be (and probably am) wrong.

i suppose i'll go find a whole to crawl in, whilest eating ramen...for a few days
