Wow, thanks for the links and for getting all of this stuff in one place!

I had a question that maybe someone could answer - I came across a rumor some time back (can't remember where) that there was an update to Eternal Fighter Zero in the works, and that it would feature the girls from Clannad in addition to the usual staples. Is there any truth to this? If it is more than just a rumor, I wonder what the odds would be of the game having Reverie as well...

Sounds like wishful thinking to me. Tasogare Frontier's pretty much completely gone over to Touhou, product-wise. I've got a feeling that it'll be a long time, if ever, before we see another update for EFZ.

I have a patch that allows you to select Kanna and Boss Mizuka.

http://jeongilkun.com.ne.kr/doujinsi/bossmizuka2.jpg

This patch will also let you have a battle with Boss Mizuka(as a mid-boss). She is damn cheap...

Anyone want it?

I thought you could select Kanna by holding the 4th button (whatever you have it defined as) over Misuzu - or is this what the patch does?

And speaking of EFZ, tax returns finally came and I'm thinking of adding some more money to Himeya's coffers, but I'm rather confused - are the Blue Sky Edition and Bad Moon Edition stand-alone products, or would I have to buy the EFZ Renewal first to run either of them?

Basically, at the beginning of the game, the players form a 'story group', each taking the role of a particular character. As the story progresses, each sees the story from the perspective of his or her particular character, and is offered choices depending on his or her role. The direction of the story as a whole is determined by a combination of the choices of all players.

You'll need EFZ renewal to run the expansions, though BME isn't dependent upon BSE.

Yes, but the patch that I am talking about will allow you to select Boss version of EX Mizuka(a.k.a Unknown) with all of her cheap CPU only moves too.

Ah, okay. From the ones I've played, there do seem to be some cheap CPU enemies in EFZ, being able to turn the tables could be nice!

AstCd2, the link you sent doesn't seem to work, bringing up an error page requesting that the viewer reenter the site from the main page...
And yeah, I knew that the BSE and BME weren't dependent on each other, but wasn't sure if they could be run on their own or not - looks like EFZ Renewal will be my first purchase then. Also, what exactly is the difference between the BME and BSE, and is one 'better' than the other, or do they both have their merits and flaws, or different characters?

My apologies about the link. You won't find anything there that wasn't detailed in my post, so I won't bother to find the correct one.

BME and BSE both include a number of 'fixes' to the game (those in BME more drastic, including revision and removal of several moves), but the main benefits to having them are the additional characters. BSE adds Misuzu, Kano, Minagi and Kanna, while BME adds Mishio, Kaori and Ikumi.

My personal opinion is that BME is superior, as I found many of the characters from BSE irritatingly difficult to use, but bear in mind that I'm not one of those people who spend 6 hours a day playing these things.

I need to get both Planetarian and EFZ. I'm TORN ;_;

Why, the solution is simple! Just buy both! =P

Also, BME is much more balanced.

In original EFZ, Shiori could beat anyone with her powrful ice beam.
Rumi's auto-guard ability was GOD-ability in BSE.

New characters Ikumi and Kaori is fun to use too. Another new character Doppel Nanase is really hard to use though. =/

I need to get both Planetarian and EFZ. I'm TORN ;_;

Well..... If you are in a mood to read some good novel, I say go with Planetarian, or if you are in a mood to beat up a heorine that you dislike (for me, I had fun beating up Mayu) or a good fight, go with EFZ. =)

GreatSaintLouis
2005-05-16, 14:42
So it sounds like the BME is the definitive version to get... However, are Misuzu et al. still available?

And kouryuu, I'd have to cast my vote for Planetarian first - it's only around $10 (with the exchange rate when I ordered it, it was $9.50-something), and it's an awesome story you can come back to over and over again. EFZ is a bit more spendy, yet you DO get a physical product to go with your purchase (my biggest gripe with Planetarian, but I'm not up for spending ¥10000+ on Yahoo! Japan for one of the versions distributed at Comiket or wherever). Plus, think of it this way - if you purchase Planetarian first, then you just need to earn the $10 back before you can purchase EFZ, but with EFZ being ~$30 at the cheapest, you'll have to stock up more money before you're back to where you were before buying it, and can then purchase Planetarian. At least, that's the sort of flawed logic that accompanies many of my consumer decisions...

Hiiragiboshi, the lunatic behind Kanoso, appears set to go parody on To Heart 2 this summer comiket. It looks to feature the same reckless disregard for original scenarios and unhealthy obsession with early 90s ultraviolence manga that made his earlier parodies so appallingly fun to play through.

It's not unheard of for certain writers to work under different pseudonyms for different companies. Leaf's Chou-sensei was famed for the number of names he worked under (and the distinctive style of his text that tended to give him away), and there's been any number of alleged Hisaya Naoki sightings under new names ever since he left Key.

(Gp32, this means you... I think you'd like it; the medical details are probably awful, but the writing's good, if I'm any judge.)
The writing of the NScripter script itself, on the other hand ... I mean, multiple topcrash bugs in the shipping product? That's just dodgy. -_-

Oh, right -- this is an NScripter-based game, for all those who are interested. However, the latest version of ONScripter will topcrash at some points (unimplemented commands and the like); the game itself running the stock NScripter client topcrashes at some of the same points, though (malformed syntax and the like).

And of course, we don't have any future plans to translate this game, good as the writing [well, apart from the medical details, which are ... um ... well ... I guess coming from a scenario writer who's been known to use Eroge Common Comatose Heroine Illness (the vaunted ECCHI) heavily in the past, they're not ... um ... too horrendously misstated] may be.

While the originality of the premise is questionable, it's certainly an interesting read.

In particular, I really liked the deliberately minimalist approach to the direction and writing. Pretty much every game these days contains more filler detail than it should, so it's very refreshing to see a game that takes the opposite approach and depicts only the core ideas, leaving the rest to the reader - it definitely worked for me.

Further, the free distribution of the program and minimal text content make it the most ideal candidate for translation I've ever seen. If there aren't any plans to make a translation patch at this point, English-speaking players certainly have cause to petition for one.

Tomo Kataoka's afterword on this is interesting:

Thoughts After The Words

About The Visuals

I ended up utilizing far more pictures than I ever thought I would.

At the onset, I had intended to go with simple images clad in black and white alone ...

And if I were someone who had the right to call himself a real writer, it might actually have worked that way, but ...

In my mind and in my heart, it seems that art and text will be forever intertwined.

About The Voices

In the end, I decided to utilize voices after all.

After all, to the last they were recorded so they could be compared to the unvoiced version, so I was pleasantly relieved to find that they do introduce a question all of their own.

And that is: what is the difference between those who play unvoiced first, voiced second and those who play voiced first, unvoiced second?

I wanted to know what that difference was, and that is yet another reason why I ended up putting the voices in.

Conclusion

Now that all is said and done,

one must wonder whether the original concept -- of deliberately shifting the burden of imagination (primarily by minimizing voice, visual, and written media) to the reader in hopes of planting therein the seeds of a feeling without end -- had merit.

I think that the "principle" of it is in the right.

But in the end, I feel as if I might not have been the best choice for the application of the principle.

Leaving questions of style and genre specifics aside, at the very onset my main question was this:

Whether novel-type writing -- not script- or poem-type -- would be better for this kind of project.

But if there were to be no pictures, then one would have to spend a lot of words on character descriptions.

Conversely, if character descriptions were sparse, then pictures would be necessary after all.

Is that obvious? Certainly. But it really does bear saying.

Oh, it might be true that things might be different if one were to work at it and work at it intensely over a long, long time, but ...

For my part, I ended up using many more pictures than I had originally planned because I realized -- because of the aforementioned dilemma -- that it would be difficult to tell the story without them (so much for my original plan for simple black-and-whites ...).

And on top of that, since the in-game user interface mimics a movie, only two lines of text can be displayed at once -- yet another betrayal of the original concept, I think.

Therefore, I don't think that at present, I myself can reach high enough in pursuit of that ideal ...

But if you who have read this piece -- circle members, writers, it doesn't matter -- feel like reaching for it yourselves, I beg you to try where I have failed. Particularly you novel-style writers out there.

Because I cannot help but believe that the guiding principle is just.

And because it may well be that small limited visual novels, written by small limited hands and running on small limited systems are the last and best virtual reality that we have ...

Particularly interesting is that he's disappointed he didn't manage to get further away from conventional visual novels; as a contrast to the dead trees I've been ploughing through recently, I felt the balance Narcissu reaches is actually rather satisfying. In particular, I thought he did pretty well both keeping descriptive passages to a minimum and restricting our views of Setsumi to glimpses.

AstCd2-> I'm actually very tempted to translate it myself.

Nanatuhaさん-> そうですね。Clannadやフェートのような巨大作品はいくら面白くても、人生は短すぎるので二度とプレイする予定がありません。ああ、キネチックノベルもこのナルキッソスのようなものもあって良かったな-って思っています。

Eroge Common Comatose Heroine Illness爆!

At least this time he seems to have decided what's wrong with them... and though I'm not in a position to judge the treatment details myself, there are two hospitals mentioned in the credits, so it sounds like he did at least some research.

Is this true creativity, a joke, or something that, to his mind, is a very good line...
He obviously thinks that it's a very good line, as per his afterword:

About The Subject Matter ...

As mentioned above, I ended up putting many different experimental elements in the plot.

But in those elements (storyline and the like), I allowed myself to the last to put all my heart into writing the way my heart desired, for this was not a commercial piece, nor was it work.

I wasn't particularly interested in whether it was interesting, or whether it aroused me, or whether it made me cry, or anything like that.

Oh, to be sure, it wasn't as if I was protesting against the criminal legal system or the current health care system, or anything like that either ...

... In the end, if those of you who played through it ...

... felt that it was boring, or interesting, or that there was a message, or that you really didn't get it, or that you felt disgusted, or that you didn't feel happy, or anything else ...

... no matter what it is that you felt, as long as you felt something ...

Then that which you felt is, for your part, must be the all of this piece.

As for myself? For me, personally, I feel that ...

”眩しかった日のこと、そんな冬の日のこと”
"This is a tale of a radiant day, of that selfsame winter day."

... is all.

I've not played the full game but the taikenban is... well, it's really, really weird. Conversely, Kanoso is really, really, REALLY weird. The world is much too sane a place to have too many of these nutjobs running around loose, so my fervent hopes are projected on the Kanoso and Majipuri writers that they are infact the same person - for the love of God and all that is good in creation!

I mean, you've played the demo, right? One can't possibly say it was the work of a sane mind! More importantly, what does this indicate about gp32's mental state, to pursue (and complete) a translating project like Majipuri, hot on the heels of Fate/stay night's eggplant mushroomy goodness, no less?

I had a short glimpse of the game demo in question at C68.
It was indeed a Higurashi game, sort of 3D third-person-view melee battle.

I could see several Higurashi character moving around in 3D field,
one of which being the player's, each of them holding various close-range weapons. I guess you approach any target at will and whack them until they go down.

Strongly resembled the game Berserk on DreamCast, but there should be more appropriate examples. I'm not really familiar with recent 3D games.

The writing said this game is developed under Dragoon 07's supervision.
Not much details other than that.

http://tasofro.net/higurashi/index.html

Details of Tasogare Frontier's (EFZ, Touhou Suimusou) next title have been posted.
As hir-san mentioned earlier at C68, it'll be a 3D Higurashi no naku koro ni fighting game.
The original author is also on board to write the script (although it's questionable just how much room there is for the game's sprawling plot in a deathmatch game ^^;)

If you need help identifying a demo from a full product, they're usually called "体験版" in Japanese. And no, the full version's a retail version: you've got to cough out the cash to play this one.

If by some reason you do obtain a copy of said-game, do take note that that not all the patches would work with the game executable. You can only patch within a version whole number, as in 2.00 to 2.13, or 3.00 to 3.10.

Hence, the only patch that should work for you would be "ver1.XX→Ver1.20 Update File" if you have a 1.00 version of the game

2° => So, the engine of this game is similar to the Kanon engine, isn't it?

i have a question about copyrights. i mean the companies that make games like efz/glove on fight. did they have to pay to key/other companies. i mean the charakters are key/whatever copyrights.Doujinshi are happily overlooked in Japan. A company usually will not pounce unless if you're using the show/game's full name in your doujin.

mr.aufziehvogel
2005-10-15, 17:08
and what will be if a doujin game becomes extremly popular? i mean, if the company really earns money with their product. then..someday key will say "hey guys, you are using OUR charakters. pay :P"

Shii
2005-10-15, 17:19
Generally they are only sold at Comiket and in adult bookstores, so that's rather unlikely. If a doujin house had a budget for that sort of mass publication they could afford to make their own work.

AstCd2

i have a question about copyrights. i mean the companies that make games like efz/glove on fight. did they have to pay to key/other companies. i mean the charakters are key/whatever copyrights.

In addition to the practical issues Shii has outlined, the law of copyright is not as useful for this kind of thing as people commonly believe. Prima facie, there is no property in a mere idea (such as a character). The key right commonly associated with Copyright is the exclusive right to reproduce the work1 itself. This would not, for example, protect something like Kanon against a work like EFZ, as it doesn't even come close to being a 'reproduction' of the former.

Instead of copyright, the kind of lawsuits you often see over usage of characters is based in trademarks and passing off/unfair trading legislation. I'm uncertain as to the trademark status of the popular renai gaming icons, but the Unfair Competition Prevention Law2 has provisions to prevent the use of 'indications' identical with, or similar to, another person’s famous goods or other indication. Thus, theoretically speaking, the original game maker might have a case against a doujin game maker that used its distinguishing indicators. To my knowledge, however, this has yet to be tested.

1Copyright Law (No. 48, 6 May Showa 45), Chapter II, Article 21
Notably, the right to translation (Article 27) is another.
2Unfair Competition Prevention Law (No. 47, 19 May Heisei 5), Article 2

hmm..then if i make a game with (for example) disney charakters..and it would be a hentai game .....i dont know, but i thing it i would get problems if i would produce this stuff.

if key can't protect their charakters from doujin games, than what would they do, if some company comes up with a "kanon sequel"..but ..you know...it would have another name, but it would be clear that this game is related to kanon and it would also be clear that this game is a "fictional" kanon sequel...

Depending on the jurisdiction, unfair trading laws (such as those mentioned above) could apply to prevent the misleading of consumers into believing the work had some kind of association with another well-known work when it really didn't. Japan doesn't have a common law passing off action like in the British Commonwealth countries, arguably making this more difficult, but Disney's lawyers are reknowned for being highly skilled and absolutely merciless, so that Disney hentai game you speak of would be a very bad idea indeed =P

I guess one part of it will be that Key's fans are, by and large, intelligent adults, so encouraging creative fandom by letting people spread their love of the games by making spinoffs may well serve to increase sales of Key's games. (Bear in mind how little advertising Key actually do. And I know several people who first met the Kanon team in one of the various dojin games, and were then inspired to check out the original.)

Disney, on the other hand, target their products at preteens, so the prospect of high-quality sympathetic fan fiction is basically nil; they also have a huge advertising budget.

It can be noted in passing that due to the unoriginal nature of most of Disney's output, you could quite easily make a hentai game based on a number of their titles ("Beauty X Cinderella!") and it would be difficult for them to prove a case if, as the dojin makers do, you drew your own artwork in a style not slavishly copying theirs.

mr.aufziehvogel
2005-10-16, 08:03
ok that sounds right :)

another question of me is....why did key do pc versions without voice and ps2/dc versions with voice?

i mean , the pc versions are aimed at adults (18+) and as far as i know, ps2 and dc versions are only the all ages versions. is that right?

but why don't they make voices to the pc versions? i mean, yes you can buy the dc/ps2 versions, extract the voices and patch your pc version but isn't that kind of a double strategy?

i mean it's a bit unfair to the pc users.

i don't know if this is still true, but i've heard that in japan, the pc hasn't the same "value" as in the us or europe. more ppl have consoles as pc's. then why didn't they make adult versions for consoles? or isn't this right anymore? (i've read that 2003)

hir
2005-10-16, 08:31
Attempting to speculate, hope my knowledge proves sufficient:

There already are many PC Adult games which feature voices. Casting of the voice actresses bring high attention among fans.
But somehow Key chose not to release their PC product with voices included.

No knowing why, they may have described it in magazine interviews or something but that's out of my knowledge.

Recording takes very much time and cost. You have to choose and direct the actors/actresses. They have to have the right voice for the characters.

Maybe the company didn't have enough resources to spend on voice-related works to make it in time for PC version release.
Maybe the scenario writer was too slow or the company didn't have enough money.

(When the PC version makes good sales, they would recover some money to create Console versions, adding voice elements)

Or they may claim they didn't want their stories effected by the images of those voices...classic dispute.

When I finished Kanon and Air on PC, I though for both that the scenario was way too long for it to be voiced. Then I hear it'll be released for DC. I didn't believe it but they did it. And they were both excellent.

So if time or whatever permits I think Key would do it. And they will on Tomoyo After. Now you get what you wanted.

Oh yeah, and Adult game for console would never be (publicly) tolerated by the society. That's the general rule since the ages of NES.
(GTA San Andreas received 18+ sales restriction for its violence and obscenity in Japan)

And should I mention AllAges/18+ casting problems?

mr.aufziehvogel
2005-10-16, 08:40
thanks hir. but i mean, is this right that more people have consoles than pc's?

i still think it's a bit unfair. maybe it is because of the time...but why didn't they make voice updates for free when the dc/ps2 versions are out?

the pc users pay the same price and it has no voices. (not that i like voices so much, but it's unfair that we pay the same price and have "less features") :)

i mean, yeah i have a dreamcast. but i don't want to mod it only because i want to rip the voice files off the gd-rom.

and i dunno where to get voice files ather way.

that's what i am talking about.
