Not to be overly cynical, but I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that Maeda wanted to pay homage to an obscure Irish band =P

The more persuasive theory is that he named it so because it's Gaelic word for 'family', though recently there's been some debate over that too.

Some googling will also turn up english pages regarding the meaning of Clannad, but this one is concise.

Hi I found this page from my referer log. The works & discussions here are quite impressive. Please keep it up...some day those novel game makers would think of selling them overseas.

Some googling will also turn up english pages regarding the meaning of Clannad, but this one is concise.

Never thought it became an issue outside Japan in this context.

The point is:
1. Maeda Jun is a fan of Clannad(the Irish band). He mentioned it in Key website's staff diary.
2. He later describes the Title of their new game as "Irish for 'family'".
3. Shortly after the game was released, some japanese Clannad(the Irish band) fans ranted against Key saying that the company stole the word from its owner and told the meaning of the word incorrectly.
4. The debate got hot in some areas. Key kept silece on the issue. Key fans' reaction was rather cool. Eventually the topic went off.

I think Key had made a serious blunder on this, but it seems they managed to pass it by. I don't really care much, though.

Thanks for the explanation, hir-san! It had me wondering as well. Personally I think Clannad is a great name. The same goes for Air and Kanon, for that matter: short, simple and still quite interesting. It makes these games kind of special, or at least I think so.

Thanks for the clarification!

Maeda certainly does seem to have some eclectic tastes in music.

しかしHirさん本人が来るなんて思ってもみなかったな…^^;

Actually I found this forum some time ago when it was mentioned
in 海外葉鍵事情 thread@2ch... I don't know how much people
overseas watch/refer to them, though.

It is amazing to see this much effort brought into translating
japanese novel games.
I do have interest in E>J / J>E translation regarding these topics
(game, anime, etc.) I'd be glad to be of any assistance.
Well depending on what that may be.
