Well I was just looking on the Bandai Entertainment store and to my surprise they shown a listing for the Garden of Sinners aka Kara no Kyoukai. Now when you click on the link there is no photos or price listing but it is still listed. Now whether or not this means Bandai has the rights to dub it or to just release it in the US I don't know but it would be nice if that were the case. What do you guys think?

It's been hinted that Aniplex USA have the rights (shows up on their banner add on ANN),
they release via Bandai Store.

P.S.: Gaijin, for future reference, Kara no kyoukai is a novel series, not a visual novel sereis. We didn't even make a thread about Angel Beats when it was airing =P

what the moogle... *searches*
anyways, I haven't found official info or a sample of the original source that tells me they just botched the job, rather than the quality of the early movies simply being inferior to what we would expect...

Being a layman with this stuff I am relying on entirely on google, so feel free to add better information...

But, assuming it isn't just a botched job; the gist I'm getting is this :

With all the bickering over the resolution, filtering, blah blah blah... it's just a shame it couldn't all have been animated a few years later and have avoided the issue entirely. Because the screenshots from the epilogue look amazing.

http://salmon.gundam.eu/knk/knk-epilogue035815.png
http://salmon.gundam.eu/knk/knk-epilogue040183.png

It'll just guess it was actually animated at 1920 x 1080, because doing a bicubic down to 720 and back introduces noticeable blurring.

source (http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showthread.php?t=102589&page=18)

What I can tell so far from looking at various screenshots:
The Blu-rays are not entirely upscaled. The background art and all the 3D CGI stuff looks quite good. The characters however appear to be scanned at SD resolution. Maybe someone screwed that up and they haven’t got enough time or money to fix that, so they simply upscaled them.
Also, the epilogue looks as it should, no upscaling there.
Sum that up with the lossless audio and you still got something that’s way better than the DVDs.

Here's a nice comparison of one of the movies versus the DVD version :

http://cfile2.uf.tistory.com/original/122C96444D4785E30A6078 (and this face shot is probably from first movie)
The later movies seem to fair better than the earlier... unsuprisingly...

So my conclusion (Assuming that these are direct screenshots from the BD): I'm not fond of the sharpening filter (that reminds me of Q-tec) at all, but this is probably not a SD upscale. I see that some details are too fine for a SD upscale. By the way filter is applied to the background as well (Since someone was mentioning that maybe they only applied the filter to characters). Check the imagewriter114195.png, you can obviously see the smudging there.
source (http://muhootsaver.tistory.com/1197)

And lastly this link gave me a little background on Q-tec :
http://muhootsaver.tistory.com/1200#comment8314152

* Q-tec
The biggest Japanese authoring studio, now combined with Memory Tec. Originally worked on HD-DVD.
Encoder: CinemaCraft HDe
Banding Removal: 扇
Audio Improvement: FORS System
- Authored some of the Bandai Visual, Aniplex, and Kadokawa titles (2ch)
- Some BDs they worked on: Haibane Renmei (Lain blog) and Blue Submarine no.6 (AV Watch)

* Sony PCL
The second biggest authoring studio only to Q-tec. UMD (for PSP) are authored here as well.
Encoder: SONY
Banding Removal: SBMV
- Authored some of the Sony Pictures, Bandai Visual, Geneon, King Records (Starchild), and Kadokawa titles (2ch)
- Some BDs they worked on: AKIRA, Evangelion movies, Eureka 7 movie, Mai-Hime series, (AV Watch) and presumably anything with SBMV.

...By the way, one interesting thing. Sony owns Aniplex but I have yet to see any Aniplex BD using SBMV. 2ch source also agrees with this. Aniplex is not listed for Sony PCL.

And this sums up your thoughts on it ?
instead of just doing a straight upscale, they used what's called "Q-tec upscaling technology" on it. What that actually is, is they basically sharpen the hell out of it and apply DNR which causes detail to be blurred out and the edges of everything looks warped as the screenshot Chiyo_chichi linked to clearly shows. That crap looks so awful.

This sounds pretty reasonable :

...Could it be better? Well, if it all looked like the epilogue it would certainly look better - but the rest wasn't animated at that high a resolution, so what's done is done. Maybe it was filtered when it was originally made, maybe it was filtered for the BD box. No one at ufotable/Sony/Aniplex is going to answer that question. If there wasn't complaining about filtering, there would instead be complaining about softness. It's all moot now. For all intents and purposes, this is likely the best version of KnK that will ever be...

So... it's just like AIR, where the animated portions were lower resolution than the backgrounds? Well, except AIR used a really terrible upsampling algorithm for the animated portions. Both releases suffer from less encoding artifacts compared to their DVD counterparts, though.

This is grammatically incorrect. If something is countable (e.g. people, cars, encoding artefacts), you have to use "fewer".

*sits impatiently staring at an order status screen that refreshes every minute in the center of a circle comprised of various Kara no kyoukai figurines, nendoroids, novels, magazines, games, etc. with nothing but Kalafina and Rakkyo OST music blaring in the background*

I'm a scientist! Nothing is ever perfect! Who cares about little nitpicky issues like that! The promised day that Aniplex USA has waited for has come! Rakkyo is about to be unleashed to the NA audience! The day us fans of the series have been waiting for since the first time "Fukan Fuukei" graced the Japanese big screen! And best of all... THE TRANSLATIONS OF THE ARTBOOK! XD

P.S - j/k I'm actually only laying @ the computer, listening to my Yuki Kajiura folder refreshing every hour ^^;. But still, I don't care about really bad nitpicking of video unless it is some glaring problem like some greening I've seen in some upconverts.

Looks like TRSI is sold out of the boxset now... Glad I picked up a copy at the showing (they brought 10 copies with them to the theater, along with 7 movie guidebooks, one for each movie)

At the screening, the upsampling filter looked very obvious in the animated characters, although I got used to it by the end of the first movie. They had a producer from Aniplex and a producer from ufotable there, who had interesting things they talked about. For example, the scene where the police are searching through the grass in episode 7 took months to finish.

Just got it. :3

Best looking boxset I now own... High quality materials: even the book and blu-ray cover is made out of some material that won't leave fingerprints (not velvet... ummm what is it called...).
I accidently brushed the plastic sticky cover wrapping against the artwork on the front of the box (oh crap!), but even though it was well stuck to the artwork; I pulled it off and .... not even the slightest damage. (whew!)

As for the video quality... I only previewed Thanatos (the oldest); and it looked good to me. Obviously better than DVD quality (judging from scenes with great detail and sharpness).
When I paused it and approached the TV I could see the poor filtered quality of the characters and non-background content...

But, since I don't notice it on the 53" HDTV while playing (I was however using the 120Hz feature; TV smooths out motion, but shouldn't affect low-motion scenes) I'm perfectly happy with the purchase :D And assuming it only gets better quality in the later episodes then I have no complaints at this time.

Oh, well there is one thing :/ Apparently my amplifier isn't up to blu-ray audio specs :/ So I can't listen to it in 5.1 properly... yet...

It's like AIR in the fact that it's upscaled, but QTEC is much, much worse than what AIR used. It's pretty much an insult towards anyone who bought the KnK box set.

It looks fricken awesome!! The top is just a tad warped, but not a huge cosmetic issue with me. It ties up fine and keeps everything protected, so it's doing it's job ^^. I spent the past two days plowing through the set and I couldn't ask for any better visuals! Definately a huge step up from the DVDs! The subs were very good. A few slight errors here and there, but that's to be expected. Very easy to read font. Probably Tahoma with a black outline (Not like FUNi's god awful pure white >.<)

The two books feel like (and probably are) velvet! Soft, fluid to the touch with slight fingerprints and tracks from touching it. Artbook is absolutely gorgeous! And helps me prove that it is a gyp that the regular edition art for the DVD's looks better than the Limited Edition!! The translation booklet is fun to read with the interview with Nasu, Takeuchi, and Sakamoto. Some very interesting info behind Type-Moon and the production of the movies. ^^ Nasu is especially interesting. He gave an apology for Movie 3's story and noticing that it paled in comparison to the novel. You can easily see as people have stated before that Nasu is the creativity and Takeuchi is the brains of the group ;)

I am keeping it in the box it came in (a cardboard box with plastic handle with Kara no kyoukai on it) just because... letting something as precious (and expensive!) as that set lay out for dust to cover and should something fall on it would be a sin! Definately worth every single penny.

It was alot of fun plowing through all seven movies again and the epilogue. Kudos to Maaya Sakamoto for basically doing a 30 min monologue O.o That's basically what the epilogue is with some interjections from Mikiya (Kennichi Suzumura) who definately looks a little cooler now with his scar.

Whew...

LE DVDs were around 60-80 depending on the exchange rate (pamphlet, OST CD, postcards)

Std DVDs were around 40-60 depending again on exchange rate.
