We're thrilled to announce the opening of al|together 2008, the third (mostly) annual festival of amateur visual-novel translation!

Over the week of the festival, we'll be releasing 6 games, one each day, representing a unique cross-section of doujin visual novels and of different translators, in many cases with the cooperation and endorsement of the original authors.

One change for this year is an extra emphasis on treating games as literature. Along with the games themselves, we'll also be providing translator's commentaries, peer reviews, and analytical essays.

Please join us this week in celebrating the spirit of game localization, and we hope you'll also be inspired to take up the challenge of presenting a piece of your own in the after-festival phase.

There are some out there who believe that it is necessary to create some arbitrary grading scale in order to judge translation quality. There are some out there who believe that it is perfectly okay to output a barely-readable "first-pass" translation, to be "edited" later by people who have barely any knowledge of the original text. There are some out there who believe that it is perfectly ethical to translate another person's stories without the original author's knowledge and permission.

Oh my.

Well, in any case, I'm indeed very interested by this development. And, to be honest, I am thrilled by the concept of an al|together that I won't feel any sense of obligation to take part in* - I'd much rather just look at (and cross-examine the translation quality of, naturally!) the output.

*by this I mean if it was a public al|together I'd probably _have_ to participate to show that I'm not entirely full of hot air (just mostly!), which is something I don't really want to do because I can't write a good translation to something the length of Moonlight Blue in a month, and there's nothing shorter and free I really like...

OMG awesome. Best news of the year. To be honest, should this be called al|together 2009 instead of 2008?

]Good luck!
Um, why is everybody wishing insani luck, anyway? They don't need it. They've probably been sitting on those releases for at least a week ...

First I want to say congratulations it finally ending with success, even though up to now I'm yet to play al|together gift this year since they use torrent to distribute files and I'm one of unlucky person for that.

Certainly they really did extending phase for al|together 2008.
On the side note, if my comprehension is correct, the submitted piece for extended phase will be presented as a piece for al|together 2009. In other words basically it just al|together 2009 labeled as another.

The other point that need special attention, it seems whoever had interest for participating should be really serious since the requirement for them to accepting the work is the real deal. Whoever participates I wish you luck.

It looks like they'll be putting up [http://visual-novels.net/forum/showthread.php?p=5407#post5407]direct downloads[/url] at some point, actually.

We (v-n.net) are going to try to negotiate mirroring rights but the decision lies with Insani so don't get your hopes too high ^^;

Um, I hate to point this out, but when your staff members are going around insulting (http://visual-novels.net/vn/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=820&Itemid=2#jc_writeComment) them for being "stupid", you really think they're gonna take kindly to that?

Yeaah... that wasn't the smoothest move on his part. I personally think its great Insani uses Bittorrent since its such a interesting technology but other staff may disagree.

'those of us who can't use torrents' what. I demand that insani offer an alternative A|T page for those of us that can't use HTTP!

Copy the link location for the game/version you want and add .torrent to the end (in your web browser bar). :) Hang around for a while and the server usually kicks in even if the torrent seems dead.

Example: http://www.insani.org/releases/NegaebaMac%5BChrisStLouis%5D%5BAT2008%5D.zip becomes http://www.insani.org/releases/NegaebaMac%5BChrisStLouis%5D%5BAT2008%5D.zip.torrent
