I didn't see them posted, so here are the 2007 sales ranking figures (source: http://jbbs.livedoor.jp/bbs/read.cgi/computer/15097/1098155368/ )

The company who was collecting those stats previously, PC GAME, went bankrupt, so these ones come from specialized magazine TECH GIAN instead.

The first figure is TECH GIAN aggregate sales 2007/01/16~2008/01/15,
The second column is totoPUSH!! sales
The two others are Sofmap and Getchu rankings.

Man 2007 was a crappy year for eroge. Good thing this year is making up for it with interest. I loved Touka Gettan's anime adaptation, but the game itself was generally a miserable experience to (try and) play, and it generally didn't carry the 'magic' of previous CARNELIAN-arted works - feeling rather flat and lifeless in comparison.

Why does a stupid mahjong game beat out two other very good games by so much?

I must disagree here. Last year had Little Busters, Seinarukana, Natsumegu and Nagisa no, Sekai de Ichiban NG na Koi (which I'm still playing, but enjoying very much), Lyrical Lyric, KoiTate, Katakoi no Tsuki, ExE, and HoneyComing. 10 good games I see in just a quick scan of that list, and ignoring anything not on it.
So, I'd hardly call it a terrible year, although this year does look to be a better one overall. 10+ good games, and the year is only halfway done!

Well, from 2006
13 フルアニ Leaf 27251
did well too. Because of animated cutscenes, I suppose.

Not too bad, considering that it came out at the end of November. AsuKimi was 4th for its' month in sales at Getchu. I just started buying eroge a few months ago, and this is the only 2007 title I've purchased. Little Busters! EX was announced before I purchased the all ages version, so I decided to wait for that one.

See, the thing is, that there is the difference between 'good games' and 'Holy shit fuckawesome games'. I won't deny that there's a decent number of the former, but out of the latter, I would only (very, very hesitantly) include Little Busters (I'm sure I'll like LB!EX more, because it's supposed to fix most of my complaints e.g. the weaknesses in everyone's story except rin's, as well as adding a lot of extra content) and Sekai de Ichiban NG na Koi in that. 2004, 2005 and 2006 both had a decent number of 'holy shit fuckawesome' titles, and 2008 already has some.

So yeah, compared to other years, I think my 'crappy year for eroge' remark was pretty close to the mark =p (ignoring the fact that Little Busters! isn't an eroge.. because 'visual novel' isn't specific enough and I absolutely refuse to use the term 'bishoujo game'. and 'ren'ai game' is almost as bad)

Because players like it more?
Myself, I love mahjongg, and a lot of people in Japan do so too.
And that mahjongg game looks awesome.

Generally, release timing makes little difference since the bulk of sales is concentrated during the first week of release.

Purple Software screwed up momentum by releasing two major products (the first of which was a disappointment, so the better received release got less attention) the same year.

I'm sorry, but my 100 hours input into Seinarukana would have to disagree with you there, and say that it belongs on that list with Little Busters.

how much of it was story and how much of it was rpg?
Not entirely sure, because whenever an event happens during the "RPG" mode, it switches to the "Novel" mode to tell the story and the events. So it all feels pretty even.

Generally you have a fairly thick novel portion at the beginning and end of each chapter, which serves as the main storyline for the chapter, then you play the RPG portion for about as much time, only the RPG is interrupted by even more novel events. Like in the first chapter, once you fight through to a certain point on the map, you encounter Katima, and you have a fairly long portion detailing the world and her introduction to the party. Same thing happens again in the second campaign of that chapter, when Talia and Sorulaska are trying to meet up with your team. If you come across a point of particular influence, such as say a mana well in the middle of the Withering World, where you don't have a real fortress to restore your health and attack uses, it has a novel event telling you what you found, what its used for, and how many times you can use it. Generally, whenever you reach a certain point on the RPG mode, a "Goal marker" if you will, a novel event occurs. And Boss battles are always proceeded by a novel event.

Also, my computer runs slow otherwise, so I'm generally playing with the battle animation off (turn it on for boss battles and such though), so the RPG mode portion goes by pretty fast for me. So If I had to estimate, I'd say at worst the time is spent half and half, but more likely spent mostly on the novel portion.

Either way, the biggest point is that, Even though its kinda extremely long, (Took me I think 50 hours to reach the first ero-scene, and haven't seen a single one since) the story and the characters have kept me interested in it for that long. Which is more than I can say for some RPGs I've put equivalent time into. That and unlike most RPGs, Seinarukana never has a grind where you have to sit there and level up with nothing happening-generally you reach a point where the paths on the map merge, so you just spend the mana you've gathered to level everyone up right there. takes a turn, maybe two, and you're off again.

Edit: Oh, and despite all that time spent, I'm still only finishing up chapter 9 (out of 12 plus a prologue) for my first play through. There are several routes: Nozomi (who I'm aiming for, see my icon.) Satsuki, and Narukana (Narukana isn't available until your second play through and is decided based on a choice your granted in the prologue which isn't available on the first playthrough)'s routes go to Chapter 12, while Katima, Narya, and Luptna's routes end in chapter 10. The Main event that determines your route is in Chapter 5, but a large portion (maybe 80-90%? is trunk, so not sure how much the individual routes change the game aside from their endings.)

Actually, I haven't played either Spirit of Eternity Sword game.. maybe I should. Not really into the eroges that have other gameplay stuff as well, personally, but there's always room to change my mind.
